Yes 5/6 point harness is preferred but sometimes not practical. I ran a Schroth quick fit pro (DOT approved 4 point harness with break away anti sub on the inboard shoulder strap, even compatible with HANS) in my previous car with the stock seats.
I didn't use it when street driving (sometimes you need to be bale to lean forwards, say to check traffic around a building or fence that's a bit close to the road) but it definitely kept me planted on track. Since it's DOT approved it passed scrutineering as well (most 4 points would not have been allowed).
