E85 Stats
 
Being it is now 2022 and about 10 years since these cars first came out, I'm curious if we can all share your current vehicle mileage and how many of it were running on E85 fuel. Here is mine:

Year: 2017
Mileage: 42,000 miles
E85: 19,800 miles

Also, does anyone else notice that there is less low end grunt/torque on e85 compared to gas? Or is it just me. I am using off the shelf OFT tunes.

Year: 2014
Mileage: 120,500 miles
E85: >30,000 miles


No issues with E85. Oil analyses have always come back good. Going to do another spark plug change soon, and will get an idea of what they look like compared to full 91.



E85 has better throttle response and low end torque compared to 91. Flex fuel tuned on Ecutek

Pretty early for me

2016 MY15
50000kms
12000kms on e85.

Found out the importance of e85 quality the other day. I’ve always filled up at the same station but had to fill up at another station (still under the same brand). That e85 quality made the car feel extremely sluggish and exhaust sound a lot louder. As soon as I refilled 3/4 of a tank at my usual station my ride quality went back to normal

Why are you using e85 if that's the case?

2017 toyota 86 60k miles

using e85 for approx 2.5 years 35k miles. Half of that full e85 on oft, half on ecutek flexfuel.

I saw better low end torque on E85.
2017, Ecutek, Delicious flex fuel tune.
35k total miles
32k on E85, over 90% of the time.
30k boosted

No problems, drives amazing and smooth. Flex-fuel Ecutek tuned with several revisions for a little extra perfection.

Unless your tune is not well optimized, it may be an odd feel you have for the way the car now accelerates. One of the things I noticed is when I'm not running E85, The pull post 3.5-4K RPM is very strong and really makes the car feel like it's coming alive. This sensation kind of goes away when I'm running on ethanol. I think much of this is due to the change of the curve, with the lower end torque actually being quite a bit stronger, making the overall torque more even. This "evenness" doesn't give the stronger pull sensation, but rather a more simple acceleration feeling. Regardless, the car is much quicker throughout the full rev range on E85, but the feel of acceleration differs for sure and in some way it bugs me a little too. When going back to 93, I enjoy the feel of the pull post 3.5K RPM. E85 just doesn't have that same feeling as it is already pulling pretty good from lower RPM's.

That's just my thought on that. Again, it may also be that your tune isn't quite up to par, and of course, your tune could be optimized differently in general. I'm not too familiar with how well OFT's tune is on E85, but judging by the dyno pulls I've seen from OFT, it seems pretty good.

For some reason it feels that way when leaving from a stop to about 2.5-3k rpm, but I may be wrong. Maybe since I have EL headers.

I'd really like to know your thoughts though regarding the ecutek custom tune compared to oft, did it make any significant differences and worth the extra investment if one is already on OFT e85?

E85 probably does pull harder at lower rpms, but for some reason gas feels like it has more grunt from a stop to me. Could be because E85 tune is smoother giving me the impression that it is not pulling as hard. Going to test it again on my next tank.

I'm also assuming OFT tunes are geared towards UEL headers, which could explain what I feel since I have Tomei EL headers. Might consider ecutek if it wasn't for California's new law that requires stock tune for SMOG.:mad0260:

I honestly don't think the difference is worth it. Being able to run flex is nice (you can flex on oft as well, but it's more of a pain and you'll need a custom tune) and I'm planning on turboing soon so it was worthwhile.

I would doubt your tune for UEL is bad enough that with EL you have any kind of losses at any point in the curve. It's certainly not optimal, but you probably still have a pretty good looking torque curve overall, and so I would bet you are experiencing exactly what you say - a smoother climb in acceleration which gives it less sensation of oomph in a sense.

Ecutek you can flash back to stock map just like OFT. Smogged my car no problem

I agree e85 probably feels underwhelming due to it removing the “NA lag” you’d encounter during the torque dip.

That said if you did a drag race against a stock/ UEL only car you’d see the performance increase e85 has:
