Thomson's System Motorsports 2022 Toyota GR86

Hi all,

We're back! Here's our new pick up - A '22 GR86 in Raven Black D4S! We also have a '22 White BRZ on-order/incoming but more of that later! Some of you on this forum may remember our old Raven D4S FRS build back in the day - we miss it dearly, and will be working directly with our team members, technical partners, distributors, and manufacturers to develop our new ZN8/ZD8 - with particular focus on wheels (yay 5x100!), suspension, brakes, and interior.

It's been years since our FRS era, and we have been busy expanding and scaling our distribution on both our retail and wholesale side for nearly every platform that has emerged since then. Some of our closest industry partners and favorite brands will make its way onto this build - including but not limited to Rays Engineering / Volk Racing / Advan Yokohama / BBS Japan, Germany, and Motorsport / Varis Japan / KW Suspension / SPL Parts / RacerX Fabrication / Recaro Automotive / Race Technologies & Brembo Brakes / Project MU / KYO-EI / Project Kics / GReddy / HKS, and much more. As far as the platforms we have been busy developing, this includes but is not limited to the GD/GR/GV/VAB WRX/STI, FK7 Civic, FK8 Civic Type R, 350z/370z/G35/G37, A90/A91 Supra, Tacoma/4Runner/Lexus GX/Tundra/Land Cruiser/FJ/Bronco, E46 M3, E9x M3, F8x M2/M3/M4, G8x M3/M4, 981/718/997/991 Porsche GTs, and more. Since then, our company ideology has been grounded on the firm principle that all cars are deserving of quality parts procured in a tailored and utilitarian manner - this is where we come in. We are working in tandem with many of the aforementioned companies and will be showcasing the catalog of what we will be offering on this car first! For any technical questions regarding what we can do for you - please do not post in this thread and instead refer to PM or contact us directly here or on the Commercial Classifieds, as we do not want to derail the point of this thread - all about the car!

Now - To the car!

First order of business.

Rays Volk TE37SL 18x9.5. Concave face or bust! This will serve as our main footwork for the time being; as we test and R&D new fitments.

KW Clubsport 2-way Adjustable coilovers w/ integrated camber plates and helper springs. We decided to go with the clubsport as we have had great luck running them in the past on some of our previous builds. These are choice for dual street/track purpose and have a ton of adjustment. We prefer these over the KW V3's that come equipped with a progressive spring because the clubsports afforded us the additional inner clearance with its linear spring - surely will come in handy for aftermarket inner wheel barrel clearance.

We will also be dialing in our fitment with this set of Rays Volk ZE40 18x10 +40. We are aware it will be an aggressive fit as we have measured much on this new platform already, and the addition of the rear fender piece and metal protrusion at the bumper tab is already quite inhibiting, however; this will provide us with a good real-world benchmark in terms of what this car can fit and what it cannot, both in terms of inwards + outward clearance, and at full-lock in forward + reverse. We think most people are going to be surprised as we demonstrate the limit of what the ZN8/ZD8 chassis is capable of fitting in terms of width/offset combinations. We do not plan to cut the rear fender piece at this time, as we are pursuing a bolt-on fitment ideology that does not require invasive and permanent chassis body modification. To us, we empathize with customers who feel some type of way, especially if they feel like they "need" to cut into their brand new $30k car. 30k or 150k, nobody likes to cut! This is how we will think moving forward - until we discover the sizing limit that the car can handle.

Glad to see you back! Your 2013 FR-S was a major inspiration for my build:

Thanks! It looks like you're rocking our #systemspec TE37 OG from back in the day in your photo (2015-2018) - 18x9.5 +36 5x100 right? :)

Yep, those are the specs! I actually got the car in 2019 and System had already sold out of these by then. I thought I would never be able to get a set of the OG bronze, but I got super lucky and found this set on Import Monster in Australia.

we will be R&Ding various aggressive fitments and previous gen sets to get it to work without chassis modification (that is the goal). We will be playing with the geometry of the rear suspension to achieve this, mainly dialing camber from the top via adjustable RUCA rather than the RLCA which tends to increase track width. On the previous gen, we have had luck adjusting both the RUCA and RLCA simultaneously to effectively decrease the track width while still getting considerable clearance in the rear - but we have to do so carefully to not crush the axles in the diff.

First on our list is 18x10 with a 255/265 R-comp.

I was starting to get excited (265 R-comp!), but then I saw the photos, and realized that perhaps my expectations were wrong.

Do you plan to only do "stance" fitments, or will you also work on performance/track fitments?
Like -3...4º front camber, -2.5...3º rear camber.

Not that I have anything against stance fitments (in fact the amount of camber you have on photos looks better than most stance car I saw), but it's just not something I'll be interested in following.

This will be a track-oriented fitment. We will not be running too much excessive camber (as you can tell from our current projects, long gone are our days of stance). We are prioritizing the driving dynamics and want to improve and iterate on this as much as possible, as we are going to be applying our tuning ideology from our previous and current projects and apply it to the ZN8/ZD8 chassis. :)

Yay!

Do you plan to participate in the 86Drive Challenge events?
Touring class, perhaps?
