I realize this is an older thread but here goes anyway! Those numbers are always a guesstimate anyway and depend on how hard or easy you've been driving, so you should never fully trust them just use them as a ballpark.
You can still get a good ballpark really by resetting your trip A or B and average MPG every time you fill up, then just pay attention to it a few times to get a good idea. For example I just went 322 miles before filling up, and then it took 11.7 gallons of fuel (tank holds 13.2). My average MPG was 29 and as you can see with those variables I still had some time to go before running out. So after you've done this a few times you can start to gauge it pretty well, if I hit 300 miles but my avg MPG is 25 then I know I floored it more often and likely won't make it to 322 like last time, etc (I didn't really do any math there, just an example). Just don't run out of gas while trying to find that outer limit, and pay attention to where your needle is when you mark these variables down for a good rough idea as well. :)
