Hello everyone. New here. With a clutch question.

how are y'all doing today . New here . Long time lurker. Got my first brz and couldn't be more stoked. Mainly using it as my daily. Manual to keep it interesting . I've noticed on cold starts the car shifts fine but say I go on a long weekend drive it starts locking me out of gears. I can't get in to first from a stop. Or almost any gear. Usually 3rd will let me in then I have to go back and hit first. I've only had the car for 3 or do months and I feel like maybe I got sold a car with a problem. Any help or advice would be helpful. Thank you

how are you using the clutch and gears?

so you come up to a stoplight. you were in 4th. of course clutch in, do you go to neutral? row back down through the gears? do you sit on the clutch for the duration of the stop light, or only clutch-in again when the light goes green?

while sitting at the light, have you tried clutching out for a second to spin up the transmission and re-try 1st?

i've found if i roll to a stop in another gear, and then sit on the clutch(if i'm expecting it to be a short light), i'll sometimes have a similar issue getting into 1st, but only sometimes. as you, i'll either find another gear that will go in(usually 2nd goes in fine at that point) to move the syncro's and it'll mesh with 1st then, or i'll also just drop back to neutral, clutch-out for a second to spin the input shaft slightly, and it'll usually mesh again as it ought to in 1st.

Do you know if it has a aftermarket clutch?

Say I'm coming to a stop in 4th. I'll clutch in/neutral/clutch out/brake. Clutch in when I need to go to first. On occasion I will downshift . It will do it only when warm. I've taken a mountain road drive twice and both times it starts acting like this when I get back in to town. Once it starts doing that Ill mainline it home in fear of it getting worse. Goes away every morning on my way to work. Can the heat from some spirited driving be making my clutch drag? Only mod is an mtec clutch spring. Not sure if the previous owner adjusted or tinkered with something that would cause these symptoms

Sounds like transmission oil viscosity issue when hot. Change transmission oil first. Lots of posts and even more opinions on what to use, do some research. I ended up at Motul 75W140 to keep similar to what you are describing happening when coming off the track after 20 min. We rarely get below freezing so have no issues when cold.

As far as I know it's all stock. Except for the mtec clutch spring . I had the car inspected twice *cold* and they say it's fine. It's a 2013. Really love the car. Bummed it's acting up already

Thank you. I'll start there. Don't know when the last time it's had any fluids changed besides the motor oil.

yep, also sounds like you need to get the car out a little more to better diagnose it.

1. Check your clutch pedal engagement point. If it's too low you will have to bury the pedal to the floorboard to get the gear to select.

2. Is it hard to get into reverse as well? This might help. Possibly your lockout guide is loose.

3. Change your transmission fluid. In fact, change all your fluids for a nice fresh start.

GOOD LUCK!
