TRD Inspired Build Thread
13 Attachment(s)
Hello! This is just going to be my build thread as well as track updates for anyone who cares. I got my M7Y 2016 FR-S in mid February of 2020 in Minnesota as my first car, turning 16 not long after. The car was in very good condition when we bought it, having just under 78k miles, and the only issues were some small paint chips around the car and some smaller scratches on one spot on the hood, not noticeable unless you are looking close!
What the car came with: USDM TRD Sway bars Front + Rear (the red ones) - PTR1118130 USDM TRD Racing Exhaust - PTR0318170 Firestone FR740 tires - low quality all season tires Attachment 222541 My initial plan was to increase some of the performance to make it more pleasurable while making sure it looked good and usable to the naked eye. I will be getting a set of sticky tires for the summer here, which will help a lot. Im not planning on any more power after the headers and tune, as I don't want to risk reliability and there isn't too much else to do without FI. Im looking to satisfy the rest of aerodynamics, but not sure when all of that will be sorted out. (I am testing out how these images will work or if they will just be links) Thanks to most likely the small few people who may follow this! |
Awesome build!
I've been thinking of getting the TRD side stabilizers myself. What are your opinions on it? |

Performance wise, they are supposed to smoothen out the airflow that would be interfered with by the gap/seal between the door and window. I am not sure how effective it is at it, but I would expect that it works in some way, even most likely minimally. I would assume the Aero Fins and them combined would be the most optimal. I have lots of ideas in the future, including the TRD GT Wing that was on the 14R/14R-60, but I have to make some more money and be wise with shipping. Cheers! |

How did you find the TRD Engine Mount and TRD Transmission Mount ?

Update
As of July 2023:
The car has competed in 5 total events this year so far Gingerman (2-days): Car felt really good. Fastest pace in my run group (lowest run group). Wing did not need much adjustment, suspension was adjusted as the rear was a bit loose in the slow corners. Biggest issue was brake fade. The TRD pads were always good with autox, but did not handle the heat well. On the first straight I was hitting the apex at 60 (hit 115 on the straight), and one time the car just was not slowing down fast enough. Luckily the pit lane was straight ahead so I played it off like I was pitting. PS4 tires were a bit low on tread too... Best recorded lap was a 1:58:242, but most laps were not recorded. AutoX 1: Car did well, finished second or third I believe. Lost to prepped S2000 and possibly the Miata. AutoX 2: Car did really well with the new wheels and tires. Won the event overall, beating the Miata. Grattan (2-days): The new tires were phenomenal. Moved up a run group too, kept up with a new M4, Panoz GT2 car (unsure driver level), but a new Cayman S was slowing me down a lot! After the first day the pads were...gone and I was past the backing plates. Flew over to AutoZOne and got their highest 'quality' brakes just so I could run Sunday. They performed like the TRD pads. Not all sessions/laps run, but the best I ran was a 1:31:589 with all of that brake fade! Hoping to get under 1:30 next time AutoX 3: Car placed second behind a Veloster N (very experienced driver). Car did good as usual. |

I ordered pretty much all of the TRD Japan parts from BlackHawkJapan. Part numbers are listed, but BHJ has done an amazing job with my parts orders in terms of shipping, pricing, and customer service. Highly recommend! |

As an update for August of 2023:
Added the TRD steering wheel and TRD USDM Dash Panel. Dash panel looks nice, way better than what I call the fake '3D carbon wrap' on the OEM Panel. The steering wheel feels phenomenal, and I have had many friends say it looks and feels amazing (even though it is a bit worn) On 8/12 I had a track day at Waterford Hills in Michigan. First time there, third track day overall. I ended up being bumped up a run group after a few sessions because I was just passing everyone and looked extremely comfortable (according to the owner of the group). My Miata buddy was my instructor, and on my first hot lap with him in the car he was astonished to see how fast I actually was compared to him and my experience. Ended up with a 1:17:6, and was consistent with 18's and 19's throughout the day (with no traffic). Was happy to be passing Corvettes, a GT350R, and some newer M cars out there with ease. Only issue I had was I went off at one point but was completely fine, and I need even more aggresive pads in the front. Going to the Gloc R12 or R14's compared to the current R10. Been a while...
The car has had some things come up. In February I had an upper coolant hose leak, causing the engine to overheat (TRD gauge read 150ºC). Car had to be trailered back to MN from WI. Fun thing to try. Shoutout to my girlfriend's dad for all his help with that. If you couldn't guess, getting it onto a U-Haul trailer was...not fun. Damage was little. All the exhaust gaskets were blown out due to the heat, and the Ace headers cracked. Replaced the gaskets, headers were rewelded. No head gasket damage or warped heads. Attachment 227349 Mid May I had someone back into the car. Hood, fender, and bumper for sure need to be replaced. Unibody under fender is tweaked, need to get that straightened. Core support needs replacing too. Attachment 227350 Attachment 227351 Later that week I received the 86 'race' (TRD) brake backing plates. They are used, but got them for a great price. PN's are: 47781-ZN601 (RH) (Toyota) 47782-ZN601 (LH) (Toyota) 26290AS020 (LH ) (Subaru) 26290AS030 (RH) (Subaru) Attachment 227352 |
Great build. This thread deserves more attention than it has gotten.
