Oil temp from obd2 port
Hi all, I apologize if I’m posting in the wrong place as this is my first time posting. I have a 2013 Scion FR-S with 155xxxkm on it. Back in the late summer I got a product called autool x60. It’s a gauge that plugs into the obd2 port to display info such as oil temps, coolant temp, etc. Now whenever I’ve done reading about oil temp I see people say that 110°C+ is bad for the engine but my car reads between 107-115°C back and forth even in normal driving and up to 124°C on the track. I was just curious if anyone knows if the obd2 port information is accurate and if 107-115 is really that bad for my engine. I only trust the gauge with a grain of salt as it cost like 40$. For background info this is at all rpm’s, I’m running 0w20, I have uel headers ,a tune with ecutek from delicious and my coolant goes from 87°C to 90°C(At least on the gauge). Again I apologize if there’s some type of rule I didn’t follow as again I am a noob to the forums.

Those temps aren't out of line for oil. I don't see a reason not to trust your tool since it's not gauging anything, just displaying the info from the cars computer.

109C is about 228F which is fine which is where I'm at on track. That's high though for street driving but it won't hurt anything.

300f is no problem

I had the same obd2 gauge. The oil temps always read high. When I double checked with two different obd2 gauges it confirmed my suspicion. The autool gauge was wrong. I ended up buying an aem obd2 gauge to replace it. It was about 30-40 degrees f higher than the true temp

Maybe they're calculating the value wrongly? I know that there was some discussion in the past about the right PID and formula to get the oil temp and there were several options suggested.
I'm using a cheapo Bluetooth dongle connected to Torque Pro on my Android phone and in normal driving oil temps are close to coolant temps (~190 F) and rising to around 220 in more spirited driving. |
Are we sure it's displaying the correct value? Is it showing coolant temp instead of oil? Maybe I'm misunderstanding how these dongles work but as far as I can tell, they just make the already existing information in the computer accessible via Bluetooth. I don't see why they would do any of their own calculations

The dongles just expose the OBD protocol over Bluetooth, that's correct. The apps are what is doing the PID access, value calculation and display.
If the Autool x60 is not reading the right PID or doing the calculation wrong, it would show an incorrect reading. |

Note that I couldn't get the oil temp working in the free Torque Lite app. Torque Pro works fine out of the box, though, and was a good investment. |
I read also through obd2 and the torque app in android.
Normal driving for me is arnd 100 oC. With spirited driving I reach 120-125 oC. Oil spec 0w-20. You are ok. No worries. Common temps for the FA20. Just make sure you use good oil |
