GR86 Spoiler - Just Received

Just received the GR86 duckbill spoiler pre-painted from Japanparts. Spoiler arrived in perfect condition. I'm posting photos below, the spoiler arrived with screws that are supposed to go through the trunk-lid. Not sure if i'm comfortable drilling the trunk, especially if I want a different spoiler down the road. Planning on removing the screws and adding more 3M automotive tape over the areas where the screws are located. Here are a few pics of the spoiler for now:

curious if the usdm duckbill and fender vent trim addons are the same product as the JDM GR catalogue. It should be but the 2019 TRD SE aero kit had an inferior paint job on the aero pieces with everything sprayed gloss black vs the lower portions being satin black

following. no way i'm gonna drill the trunk. Maybe i'll wait for an aftermarket alternative that use 3m tape only.

The OEM Zenki, Kouki duckbills also had studs that needed the trunk to be drilled.
However, a lot of people that I know opted to remove the studs and simply stick it on.

I wonder how the production models compare.

This is the OEM Toyota piece, so i'd assume the production models will be similar. I plan to install over the weekend and will post pics if successful :)

You guys put a lot of trust in the 3M tape.
I can guarantee that if the manufacturer decided they needed 4 good sized bolts to hold it on properly I would be drilling for good sized holes.
Could always swap trunk lids later if I decided i didn't want the tail anymore.

3M only holds for so long. You will be washing your car and daily driving on freeways. That will wear down the tape. My window deflectors started to come off after 2 years. It looked like the tape was starting to dry out and cracking.

Have to agree. Also the rear section of the trunk lid is a seperate piece. So you would only have to replace that smaller piece if you wanted a stock, hole free boot again.

I forsee alot of trunk swaps happening on the 2nd Gen for this exact reason.

You are correct, and I would imagine that there’s a corresponding version that mates with the spoiler and already has the holes for mounting built in. There’s no parts diagrams out yet that I can find to check for sure, but I would expect there to be two versions of that trunk trim piece - one for with and without the spoiler. If there is, then I’d buy the trim and spoiler and the swap would be easy with no damage to the trunk.

Is the Toyota Halo White just Crystal White Pearl with a different name? IOW, the exact same paint? That would be so convenient.

I can count on no hands all the ducktail spoilers that I've heard have come off when properly attached with 3M tape on the GEN1's.lol I have a feeling it will be fine.

To me, it looks like the bolts are held on with sticky tape too.
Didn't get a clear view of the two in the center.
Do those just fit under some breakaway plastic flanges?
