Clutch suddenly feels slightly scratchy/knurly?

This started for me yesterday suddenly. The clutch feels a bit rough or almost grinding kind of feeling when pressing/releasing. I don't feel it in neutral and not all the time while driving. I never felt that before and was super smooth.

Is this an issue? Its been only 700 miles so far with no hard driving and less than 4k rpm. Also, I mostly take off in 2nd gear. Should I not be doing that?

Why do you take off in 2nd gear?

I could see staring in second gear if you are in snow, but you being in LA then NO you should start in first. Starting in second is probably not the cause of your issue. What is grinding.. the car's gears or the act of pushing the clutch in and out?

Its when pushing the clutch in/out. I felt it was easier to use 2nd gear without revving too much. Can stop doing that.

Starting in 2nd is not likely the cause of your issue, but you are definitely wearing out your clutch disc prematurely .

I have ~1100 miles (but a lot of highway) but no clutch chatter issues so far (that's what it sounds like).

soundman98 12-17-2021 10:21 PM

you paid for all the gears, this cars more fun if you use them all!

Sasquachulator 12-18-2021 01:19 AM

you should start it in third......

I'm not totally sure what knurly and scratchy mean in terms of the clutch feel, but I would say mine did weird things around that mileage. After the clutch and transmission would warm up, it would start grabbing a lot more immediately and it would be harder to ease it into gear - always felt like I was dumping the clutch. This was especially annoying taking off in first or shifting into second.

This has since stopped for me, and I associated it with something that was happening as the clutch was breaking in. This is the first car I've owned brand new with a manual, so I have no science to compare this to, just assumptions.

If you're still over revving it in 2nd, then you probably started wearing down the clutch prematurely.

It's better to modulate the throttle in first instead of band aiding the issue by starting in 2nd.

Oh man, I think I noticed this too. But I always take off in first gear.
Edit: oh misread, I meant the actual shifter for myself

Stop starting in 2nd. You've likely hotspotted the flywheel already. If you take it easy moving forward, things might improve...
