It'll be my kids problem, not mine :P

I would personally like to see more Diesel performance oriented engines instead of electric vehicles.

I like the design, but I don't see why they would need to package a hybrid powertrain with it. If they put a four cylinder engine and keep the weight down then the gas mileage would be fine.

Siriusly.Andrew 12-08-2009 02:51 PM

I would think if they did that then there wouldn't be an FT-86?

Toyota MR2 Revival?

1- I don't believe for a second that the CR-Z generated more interest

2- I agree with you in agreeing with those comments.

3- However, I would not mind a hybrid MR-2 if it was executed right!

4- The market position for the MR-2 would have to be very carefully considered. Can't be so cheap as to compete with the FT, but it also can't be too expensive, because it is an impractical car. I don't want to see it die again. Lexus MR350 perhaps?

Franisco 12-31-2009 08:25 PM

You like to list all of your responses..
I don't think it would be the same if they reintroduced this car. Obviously if it was a hybrid that's a huge change, but also with the point of price. IIRC it sat at the bottom of their sports car line at the time of the AW11 and SW20. With the FT now occupying that space where do they go? They could put it at the same price and since its MR, they'd have two chances at the price bracket.

bpv417 12-31-2009 10:50 PM

i'd love to see another mr2 come out hopefully influenced by the early 90's version

Jordo! 01-01-2010 01:24 AM

Electric motors powering the front while gas motor turns the rear wheels sounds pretty good.

Ricepuddin 01-01-2010 01:57 PM

man that thing looks pissed... well im glad to hear they are actually MRing the MR2.

TAS 2010: Toyota MR2 Sports Hybrid concept packing 400-hp 3.3-liter V6, AWD [w/video]

Back in November, the rumormill was set ablaze when reports began to surface that Toyota was working on a new MR2 packing hybrid power. Today, those rumors have been laid to rest... kinda.

In addition to the G Sport Series FT-86 and Prius, Toyota trotted out a concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon based on the third generation MR-S (ZZW30). Although the MR2 was nixed in the U.S. in 2005 (and in Japan in 2007), Toyota and its partners at Gazoo saw fit to resurrect its midship drop-top by fitting a 3.3-liter V6 where the old 1.8-liter four-cylinder used to reside and an electric motor mated to a THSII hybrid system up front. That's right, the MR2 Sports Hybrid Concept is all-wheel drive, and between the two mills, it's churning out over 400 horsepower through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

But despite its boosted output, the 2,800-pound concept is a bit on the porky side compared to its 2,200-pound predecessor. Toyota claims it can run to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds – still better than the stock ZZW30, but at what a cost to the MR2's supreme chuckability? While there's no chance of Toyota putting the MR2 Sports Hybrid Concept into production, this could point the way for things to come – for better or worse
tons of pics here... and a video showing the car being made

not bad... but unobtainium...

me... since I'm partial to hardtops, I'd take this Porsche 911 GT3 R that has a 4.0-liter flat-six putting out 480 horsepower through a six-speed sequential transmission to the rear wheels.

(if someone was to leave it to me in their will) :)

Haha. Not saying the G's FT-86 looks like a Porsche, but I thought that pic was a photochop of the G Sport version until I read your message..
I just thought someone had gone overboard and started changing the shape of it.

USMCMike 01-16-2010 06:11 AM

Why not a car that slots in below the FT86, thinking 2 seat lightweight mid engine, 130hpish, with nothing more special about it. 15,000 to 20,000 sounds about right.

Think compact car range.

Fox 01-16-2010 03:19 PM

Would be great if there will bei a new mr2! been a fan since my childhood and 3 years ago my dream came true :)

Think compact car range.

Cause then they'd have to make it a scion

as a mr2 owner (SW20 FTW!) i would love to see a new mr come out. but i would hate to see it a hybrid. nothing against hybrids really, they have potential but its not my cup of tea. also i would want them to keep it a toyota. i never really liked the scion community. (no offense to anyone)

also im suprised by how many mr2 owners are on this forum

SupraLove 11-09-2012 02:58 PM

LOVED the MR2/MR-S to death. It really was the Porsche Boxster for half the cost. Handling was great, performance was great, driver feedback -- great. I'd love to see it reincarnated again, but as others have said it's unlikely due to the lack of practicality in the first one.

serialk11r 11-09-2012 05:16 PM

Aww.
I still have hopes for the MR2 though! While the platform itself would cost more money, there is the benefit of being able to use an off the shelf FWD drivetrain. Just please, please don't use the oldest engine, we all know those are hopeless.

Anyone have news on the "new" MR2???

funwheeldrive 03-08-2017 03:00 PM

I think it's interesting that Toyota feels like there is a market for the 86, MR2, and Supra without stealing sales from each other.

I would imagine the MR2 price would have to be around 30-35k for it to be competitive?

Cole 03-08-2017 03:10 PM

I'd fuck with a new MR2, but I can't see it happening

I'd assume it would be priced in line with the Miata.

Miata starts at 24.9k. I can't imagine a brand new Mid-Engine Toyota starting around that price. I could be wrong though.

I was thinking more with the Fiata Abarth, 370z, and Miata Club/RF.

TommyW 03-08-2017 03:33 PM

I don't think it will have direct competitors. Too expensive for Miata . Maybe an Alfa or Elise competitor but much cheaper? Who knows should be interesting.

gymratter 03-08-2017 03:43 PM

sounds like click bait...

im pretty sure the 3rd sports car will be the SF-R.

Interesting. The Miata starts at 33k if I recall correctly in Canada.

It is clickbait. You pictured the vehicle (SFR) that was referenced as the third member of the potential "trio" in an actual interview with Toyota execs (Including Tada). Not sure where they pulled this MR thing out of. Some unqualified "quotes" and a render do not constitute fact.

Canadian dollars don't count. They are pretty much the same as Monopoly money.

Another case of a journalist pulling something out of his ass.

No source, no press release, and contradicts the SFR news.

WolfpackS2k 03-08-2017 05:46 PM

One big reason the GT86 isn’t gaining lots more power is the incoming Supra, a car that make’s Tada-San’s face light up at the very mention of its name. Telling EVO “The car should be lighter than its rivals”, Tada-San’s admiration for the Porsche Cayman over the larger, heavier 911 gives a hint to the new car’s size and character.
:bs:

I'll eat my hat if the Supra comes out lighter than a 911. And lighter than a Cayman...why bother imagining because there's no chance in hell of that happening.

And the excuse about not giving the GT86 more power is BS. There's a very wide hole to fill between 400+ hp from a Supra and the 205 the GT86 has. That's like saying the Camaro would never get a V8 because Chevy doesn't want it stepping on the toes of the Corvette.

As others have mentioned, most logical answer here is that the whole article is BS.
