stock clutch alternatives?
Looking for stock clutch replacement. I know Exedy makes a bunch of OEM clutches. I know Aisin is in part owned by Toyota. Any reason to go with one brand over another other than price/OEM-ness?
Aisin CKT078 is $185, includes PP, Disc, TOB and Pilot Bearing Exedy FJK1005 = $225, includes PP, Disc, TOB and Pilot Bearing OEM Toyota: PP - SU00300800 - $185, disc - SU00300799 - $100, TOB - SU00307349 - $20 Total = $305 Exedy 15806 = $400, Organic, “Stage 1” includes PP, Disc, TOB and Pilot Bearing. I honestly have no idea what “Stage 1” implies. I understand that the TOB was an issue and Toyota issued a TSB along with a revised TOB. Is the new Toyota TOB good? Any inputs regarding the other brands? Other quality brands like NTN, SKF? |
Hey, I can only go off experience but I have an Exedy 'heavy duty' clutch kit in mine (Stage 1 I assume). I was told it uses a WRX pressure plate.
I have done many hillclimbs since then with many runs at each event, very hard launches in the dry (on soft semi slicks) and much feathering in the wet, and have had no issues whatsoever. Sent from my SM-G973F using Tapatalk |
Get a better fork and pivot while you're at it.

Adds insurance that they'll not break or bend (more needed for stiff aftermarket clutches for high power outpus though). And as changing them also involves dropping transmission, worth doing at same time. For same reason people usually change throwout bearing at any gearbox dropping work, even if old still works fine.

Yes always change throw out bearing and use the updated one!

Only regret was the extra ticket punch on the wallet. Glad I went to a stage 2 though, this SC has shown itself to break the rear loose in the rain sometimes pulling hard in second hit 6k plus on my Advan all seasons. If you’re planning to keep the car for any significant period of time after you change the clutch, definitely upgrade your clutch fork. This is what happened to mine (scroll almost to the bottom). It’s apparently a fairly common occurrence.

Make sure you get a clutch alignment tool with your kit. I forgot that when getting oe parts and luckily had access to a machinist who owed my dad a favor so I was only down an extra day or two.
For that alone I'd go with exedy or aisin for your first clutch, if you hang onto the tool the next clutch/pp can be OEM parts assuming it's not got crazy power. For that alone it's probably worth getting the exedy or aisin. |
I think gen2 stock clutch package is actually a really good gen1 "Stage2" equivalent. Now that we know gen2 makes roughly 240-245 BHP based on dynos.
The prices on gen2 clutch is also roughly commensurate with "stage2" Parts.subaru.com lists them at ~2x the cost as gen1 clutch packs. For anyone with FI its a good alternative that ppl can consider that's also OEM. The flywheel looks to have the same bolt pattern but someone will need to confirm. gen 2 Clutch $451. gen 1 clutch $210 gen 2 Pressure plate $355. gen 1 pressure plate $190 |
I also had the problem with the series release lever on the series thrust bearing
