Track Day with one missing lug
 

I was swapping out my street pads for my trackpads today and one of the wheel studs and lug stripped, not totally sure how, I'm gonna blame Mishimoto because their lugs have terrible reviews and I shouldn't have bought them in the first place lol. But either way, I have a stripped wheel stud on the front right wheel, that's it. I have a track day on Sunday so my question is: is it unsafe to track my car with that one missing lug nut and should I frantically try to find a new stud before then or will I be alright? Thanks guys :)

Safety first, get it taken care of. And if you aren't already, avoid using an impact gun, hand start lugs, and always torque to spec.

Fix it, depending on your organization, they won't let you on track.

Front studs are easy to do! I am sure you can find one in stock at a local parts store or from a fellow Subaru Enthusiast.

Alrighty, thanks guys :D. Yeah, I usually just spin them on with an impact and do the rest with a torque wrench but I guess I won't be doing that anymore

You should be able to get a Dorman stud at a parts store tomorrow (hint, buy a few if they have them in stock). And it is about a 30 minute job. Or less.

After hearing all the stories about oem lugs stripping, I replaced them all with ARP and hi quality nuts. Problem solved.

The studs are in stock at many auto parts stores. Not difficult to remove or install unless you went with longer studs.

auto parts stores near me always have 1-2 in stock. but don't ask for 3 unless you're interested in traveling to their other location.

I actually managed to remove and replace all four wheels twice and only have one failure, if and you better believe it!

i was at 4-5 wheel changes over about 7 years. and then i snapped 2 studs in the same changing(fyi, i'm the only one to have ever installed/removed wheels from date of purchase, always hand-start-to-snug, and used a 4-cross to tighten). fortunately, they were both front wheels, and i only lost 2 of my winter wheel lug nuts, which were nothing special.

I'm using splined Muteki lug nuts and stock studs and have probably removed the wheels about 12 times already with no issues. I always use hand tools, though - release the nuts with a wrench, remove by hand; put on by hand until snug to the wheel, tighten slightly with wrench, torque to spec with a torque wrench.

Completely agree with getting a replacement. The only drive I would be willing to do with a missing lug is to the closest parts shop to get a replacement.

Holy crap! I swap to track wheels every meet so I've changed my wheels 20-30 times with no issues. Have I been really lucky??

What contributes to the stripping? Overtightening? Work hardening of the threads?

Track failures terrify me [emoji51]

I think the dealer or the tire shop overtightened every lug, or maybe at the factory. I think the lugs are, perhaps, soft and lead to rolls of metal. I dunno, but they f-ing suck.

i think it's mostly crud getting into the threads.
