How is the 2022 86/BRZ beating the HWY fuel economy metrics?
 

Seems like real world fuel economy for the manual BRZ is well ahead of the EPA highway estimates from what I read at 30+mpg. How is that possible? I mean a small beat is not impossible but 4-5mpg seems like a lot. Obviously a good thing but trying to figure what the EPA test isn’t capturing.

I dropped 250+ miles in the last two days since picking mine up driving it through some rough uphill roads in the Rockies and managed 27.5 MPG, guessing since I’m staying below 4000 RPM maybe it’s giving better numbers than expected.

It’s just the testing procedure the EPA uses. One specific cycle has some hard acceleration and goes up to 80 mph if I’m not mistaken and others cruise at 60 or so.

These are hard tests for a car with only 6 gears and a short final drive ratio and are likely why the numbers aren’t equivalent to the real world. There’s a reason all manufacturers have turned to transmissions with tons of gears, tiny turbo motors, or some combination of both.

Can confirm... I'm also in Colorado and I picked mine up a week ago (Limited/MT). I have about 700 miles on it, averaging almost 30mpg while driving mostly mountain roads.


Honestly I've been driving it about like I normally will, despite the break-in period limitations. I haven't really found the need to wind it out much apart from the obvious fun every once in a while. Very pleasantly surprised!
