2013 86 rod knock 900km after spring recall in nsw australia

hi all,

i was putting off getting the spring recall done for years.

after receiving 4-5 letters from toyota about how i have to go get it recalled, i finally did it.

so six weeks ago it was recalled and the valve springs were replaced.

900km on the clock later, it happened.

driving home today, i noticed a clicking noise, then 1km later it was sounding real f* bad. fortunately i had just got it home when it was sounding really bad. i cant drive it to the dealer -- it will have to be towed.

so now i'm freaking out about having to replace the engine, and my toyota dealer trying to get out of replacing it, or repairing it.

i dont want a repaired engine that likely has oil blockages and possible piston shaft damage and crank shaft damage -- i want a replaced engine.

just wondering what success others have had in australia, and around the world, getting a new engine out of toyota, whether they got a new one or negotiated a cheaper engine or what sort of warranty does the recall cover?

ive got to call them tomorrow and sort this shit out.

thanks, pops

Well now, popsicle, that's a shame your car's engine gave out - :sigh:

As far as getting the valve spring recall done and the engine going bad, I reckon it's up to the dealer/manufacturer to decide what they are going to do about it (if anything).

Sorry.

Been there. Don’t count on the dealer co operating. You may get lucky however they usually try to blame it on you. If you have to approach it via the legal system it will be a very long time before things get sorted out in either direction. If the dealer isn't co operative. You either have to pay out of pocket or sell it as is. If you DO end up replacing the engine search out an independent shop that specializes in Subaru engines. Here in the US the cost is around 8k. With a new short block, heads redone and everything tight.

If you have the skills you can do the labor yourself however most don’t

We had cheap engines like that here too 3-5 years ago. Then the recalls and covid happened. It's 4k for a used long block these days. Then there is the issue you'll have of finding a 13-14 MY engine... as any newer MY one is going to involve a bit more labor (wiring/coil/sensor swap or if a newer 17+ a front cover tear down to replace the OCV sprockets.)
