Autocross tire options

I'm curious to get thoughts about autocross tires for SCCA. I stuck with Falken RT660 on my 2018 GTI since they were able to put up with my limited camber, nose-heavy front-wheel drive. Yokahama A052s weren't on the menu as they didn't like the recipe.

Autocross season is six months away for Nebraska so why not start window-shopping tires for a car I don't have yet?

I am inclined toward RT660s or Kumho Ecsta V730s since this will be my first season in a rear-wheel drive car, and why turn expensive tires into black dust too early.

For fitment, the street class autocross practice is to pinch stupid amounts of tire onto the stock width wheel. My plan is to run 17 inch wheels, probably Enkei RPF1.

- 235/40/17 - Good fitment but damn this size is expensive
- 245/40/17 - Diameter is close but a little large
- 255/40/17 - Way larger in diameter but huge tread width

Have you seen past discussions in this subforum?

The tire/wheel selection for 2nd gen should be the same as for the 1st gen.

That makes sense and I’m not sure why I didn’t think of that before posting. Thanks!

I'm starting with 235/45/17's on stock wheels until I bump up to ST.

RT660, A052, V730, RS4, ZIII, etc available in 16s. Tire selection for 16s isn't that bad in the 200tw category.

What you don’t want to autoX on Sentury tires?

Exactly. I am on 16s and in this category there are some good choices.

IIRC, only the Yoko's are available in anything wider than a 225.

The heavier 255 on a 17" is going to be noticeably faster than a 225 on a 16".

Do we know yet what class it's going to be in for autocross?
