17inch or 18inch wheels(premium)
 

I have an order placed for a 22 BRZ premium(WRB M6) due in december.

When I ordered the 2500$ difference between the premium and limited swung me towards the premium. This is my fun car and don't really need the luxuries present in the limited(Alcantara, blind spot, heated seats etc)

The one thing I do want are better tires- So here's the question should I just get pilot sport 4s for the 17" wheels or should I get bigger wheels(18") as well?

On that note- if anyone wants to sell their 18s with tires in the SF bay area PM me. :)

Just get some 225/45/17 michelin pilot sport 4s for the premium wheels.

Being able to run 17s is great. I'd take advantage of that.

if you are just going to swap wheels and tires you need the Limited. A set of PS4 tires will be around 1000 with tax and installation. So the $ difference is only 1500 at that point. If you wind up doing rims, you are basically at zero. Not to mention the upgraded stereo.

That is unless you really hate the 18" wheel design and want a much wider setup, then the premium might make sense.

A review stated that the reason they went with 18s on the limited is that Michelin didn't make the PS 4 in 17 inch. Not sure if that is true or was true at the time.

The increase in sidewall flex (17s v 18s) and that effect on turn-in will be minimal. The 17s will weigh a few pounds less, which will reduce unsprung-weight and improve handling. To what degree, I really don’t know. If you want to split hairs, the lighter 17s should also have less rotational inertia and make the car accelerate as if it has an extra 1-2 hp.

Michelin doesn't have a Pilot Sport 4 in 215/45R17. They do offer a Pilot Sport 4S in that size.

dont limit yourself to michelin pilot 4 either.

That said, the trend to bigger and bigger wheel diameter and tire sizes, which has been going on for decades, might mean less availability in the future for what currently looks adequate but seems too small for tire makers and buyers later. I went to get Michelin Pilot 4S for my Boxster 2 years ago, but not offered to fit my 18" wheels in the OEM sizes; if I had opted for the optional 19" or 20" wheels, no problem. Even the smallest cars now have rather large wheel diameters (remember when Miata's came with 14"?) And don't even get me started on 205/60-13! Almost, but not quite, unobtainable.

That said, I will seriously consider 17's when time comes for us to buy the car.

And a minor benefit... lighter means easier to lug around in the garage during tire changes.

There is a pilot sport 4S available for the 17s.

After I posted this I did a bit more searching on this site and others and the general consensus seems to be that 17s might actually be better.

So going to swap out the primacy's for the pilot sport 4s. Thanks for the inputs everyone!

Have not had great experience with the f1 and p zeros TBH.

Also at just 30 bucks difference I would rather get the michelins based on reviews.
