Josh's Daily Driven Rallycross Build

After wanting to own a sports car my entire life and bouncing between Subarus and trucks I finally got the chance to get a 2013 FR-S. I bought the car in late 2019 and held off on doing any modding to it because I tend to get rid of cars quick. I was recently given the chance to do a 1 day class at DirtFish rally school and it has reignited my childhood dream of rally racing. My plan for now is to build up the car to be a good daily driver and a decent rallycross car.

Here is the car the day I brought it home: https://i.imgur.com/kAkjA0c.jpg

As of right now I have not done too much to it, I have added a Nameless muffled track pipe, put on some DIY mudflaps, and trimmed the rear bumper and installed a Diode Dynamics tail as turn kit.

Here is how it sits today:

Future Plans:
  • IRP Short Shifter - In the mail
  • Anderson Design and Fab 1" spacer kit - In the garage
  • Anderson Design and Fab multi-link spacer kit - Being built
  • Chuhatsu Plus Multi Road Lift Springs - Waiting on them coming from Japan
  • Trac Box and Switch Kit - Being built

Beyond that I will be getting some new wheels and all terrains for next summer but still deciding on what to get. I will also be adding some comfort/safety for racing like a harness and possibly a roll bar.

If you want to follow me along join me on instagram @Lifted.frs, I'll try to keep this journal updated as much as possible as well.

Subscribed.

I took mine to a rallycross once. It was a blast. Course was pretty rough though and I ripped out a fender liner and cracked the bumper. I'd do a bit more prep before going back, but it's definitely something I want to do again.RCE is close to finishing a set of lift springs. I may try those out once they release them.

Yeah I was dying to go to the last rallycross event around me this Saturday but I know with it still sitting stock I’ll do some damage. Going to wait till I get it lifted with a little longer travel to hit the track.

I had stock suspension and a little oversized winter tire which I think is why I had fender liner contact. A lot of the people there said it was a lot rougher than usual as well. I'd do it again with the same setup, it's just a 2.5 hour drive to the closest location and schedules didn't line up this year.

Thanks for letting me know, I’ve updated the links so they should be working now!

Welp just got word back from frsport that it’ll be late November at the earliest before I see my lift springs. This is the 3rd date they’ve given me and At this point I’m tempted to go all in on some gravel coil overs.

I have been bad about updating this but I'll try to keep it more up to date as the build progresses. I never did get my lift springs from frsport, please never use them, so I bit the bullet and ordered some Flatout GR Lite coilovers. Those should arrive in the next couple of weeks and I'll be putting them on as soon as they get here. In the mean time I've been bored and knocked out some new projects as well as some pretty unnecessary things :bonk:

First thing I did was get the car up at my brothers shop and change the trans and diff fluids, and most importantly we put the IRP short shifter in. This shifter is insane and totally changes the feel of the gearbox, I love how much it cleaned up all of the slop from the stock shifter.

After that I got pretty bored waiting on parts and spent a day stripping the interior out, because racecar :iono:

I had previously ordered a tracbox from geraldjust and a switch panel from racecargobrr and those finally arrived after a long backorder so I got both of them installed:

Along with doing that I deleted the radio and all of the speakers as well as installing a comm system with aux input for music. Mostly unnecessary but this car is loud and I feel cool having a comm system.

Next up I'm trying to find a roof vent solution for the car. I've talked to a few guys with one but they are all running a full cage and don't have that mid roof support bracket so I'm looking for some smaller vents for either side of the roof.

I just realized I haven’t updated this in a good bit and the car has made some progress.

I had a work meeting in December that happened to be right down the road from a Motorsports shop so I stopped in to try out sim bucket seats and ended up going home with a Sabelt GT3. https://i.imgur.com/ZFadtDA.jpg

I paired it with the Buddy Club low down seat sliders and gained a small amount of headspace. It’s a comfortable seat, definitely would not recommend for a daily driver, I often miss my own seats on days that I’m driving for work.

I got a Schroth Rallye 3 ASM harness for now until I decide whether to go with a 4 point cage or a harness bar. The Rallye 3 is ok, it sits a bit to the side because of the mounting so I need to keep working on adjusting it.

Shortly after getting the seat installed my Flatout GR Lite Coilovers arrived.

I had also ordered and gotten the Anderson Design multi link spacer kit to install along with the coilovers.

I wanted to get these installed asap but it was in the middle of December and between holidays, work, and my brother, whose shop I use, being out hunting on weekends they just sat in my office staring at me for weeks.

jdavis1493 01-19-2022 10:56 AM

I happened to spend New Years with a friend who also works at a shop and told him my plans for the car and he offered up his shop and help to get the coil overs installed so we set the date for January 15th as install day. The night before I inventoried all of the parts and found I was missing a bolt for the subframe spacer so I tracked one down and on Saturday we were all set to go:

The install itself went pretty smooth. Getting the subframe lined back up with the spacers was a nightmare but we got it eventually and got everything torqued down. The hardest part came when I started adjusting the ride height and pretty quickly maxed out how low I could go.

https://i.imgur.com/lUXStla.jpg

I set them all to match ride height on all four corners, got it aligned, and gave it a few test drivers. Here’s where it sits now:

Now is the part where I make an admission… I totally misunderstood Flatout’s description for these. I thought when it said “Up to 3 inches over stock” it meant that I would have full adjustability range from stock to 3 inches. I spoke with Flatout on Monday and they confirmed these are primarily sold for the lift and they are built to optimize that. My intention was to get adjustable coils that were squishy for rallycross and get me 1-2 inches of lift. After speaking on Monday they are getting me shorter and softer springs to help lower the car a bit and make it a bit softer.

For now I’m waiting on the new springs to come in and I’ll update once they’re here and on the car. I’m so happy that Flatout was quick to help and make sure I’m getting what I wanted out of these.
