Gen 2 Autocross Classing | Write your letters!
Rumor is that the SAC and STAC are reluctant to class the Gen 2 cars for the 2022 season. I'll encourage everyone to write a letter asking for them to be classed. I'm not going to campaign for you to ask for any class in particular, just that they need to find a home in both Street and Street Touring. The easy button is CS and STR because they're least likely to be major overdogs there.
http://crbscca.com/ Thanks! |
I'm fine with CS and not classing it in ST until 2023 like they did the ND2. car belongs in STX though. STAC needs to stop adding non roadsters to STR. If this was a Miata it would have had its own class setup 6mo ago for it.

NOC cant run nationally though, only for locals. |
I'd like to know, if for no other reason than being able to spend money on my STX car in confidence.

But go ahead, kill a well subscribed class. |

I already wrote a letter. Basically it said, STR or wait.
I talked to a person who is on one of the committees at Nats that thought STR or wait would also be his recommendation and I agree. I think ST* can't really be easily decided without knowing what the new motor can do with a header and tune. It probably will be a similar gain level to the current gen cars, but then that may leave us with a newer faster (more expensive) car that would also eliminate any of the remaining parity in cars the class still has (see Rx8 still getting a trophy this year) |

In STX, we are talking about a 20% displacement increase, more power stock than current prepped STX cars make with no real weight/gearing penalty. And a lower center of gravity. Not only that, but it isn't exactly easy to buy cars right now. My local Subaru dealership has 6 new cars right now - 5 Ascents and 1 Crosstrek. So I'm not super confident that there are going to be grids full of ST prepped Gen 2 cars in 6 months. |
I'll point out the new car appears to fall under the STS NOC rule for local competition. Given what we know about the car, it appears it would instantly own STX. I'm not in favor of adding it to the class without some evaluation. I think the route of Street class for '22, then ST in '23 makes a lot more sense.

Personally: I am a fan of the STR idea. It's the safe bet for everyone in 2022. It would likely slaughter STX given the dynos we're seeing come out showing 40+hp to the wheels stock vs. stock. And STR numbers are down, so even if it's going to be a slight underdog in STR, at least give it a place to place. Absolute worst case scenario is it's somehow magically a major overdog in STR (no way that's going to happen) and you just trade out being undersubscribed with ND2s to being undersubscribed with ZD8s.
If it doesn't get classed, I'll just build it to ST rules for next year, run it in XSA, sandbag all damn year long, then go to the STAC and say "see! It's really slow!" ;) |
I'm kinda feeling STU. Especially since we seem to be okay with the Fiats in the class.

My car, on E85 dyno'd at 191 whp (JDL 4-2-1, JDL FP/OP, Perrin Exhaust). Pretty typical for a standard E85 tune and of course you're going to have conditional and dyno variances. There have already been dyno's of Stock 2022 BRZs that put down more whp than my E85'd FRS. If that doesn't already tell you the massive difference in power than I really don't know what to tell you. |
All me a conspiracy theorist, but watch the SCCA class them in DS along with the first gens to really weed the first gens out of existence for street class (if they aren't already with the CTR). Reason? This pushes nearly everyone with a first gen and not in STX to go SSC, which you can only get from TireRack.
For real though, it only makes sense the 2nd gen is in a higher class than the first gen because it's going to be the same handling, but more power essentially. CS makes sense. It's basically 100% on par with the ND Miata now. Thus STR makes sense too... but "roadster" being in the name makes me think the SCCA is going to be a **** and stick it in STX. Then the first gens get shafted again and thus pushes more people to SSC. For us 2017+ people like myself, we'll be weeded out of existence if this happens. |
