Backlight of digital cluster
One thing I enjoyed in my 2016 BRZ was that at night, the gauge cluster matched with the hvac controls and infotainment screen (all red). I’ve always thought that was a bit of an under appreciated touch that made night driving so much better, especially when you turn off the infotainment screen. Everything was in sync and red is just so easy on the eyes at night.
Fast forward to this new version, does anyone know if the boxer gauge cluster will go red at night or will it stay white? Can the infotainment screen be turned off like the pre-refresh? |
I'm going to go with a no on that. You will still be able to turn off the infotainment though.
Maybe if someone wants it enough they might figure out how to reprogram the cluster for a red out. |
My 86 has the updated guages with the TFT screen.
It does not turn red. It stays colourful when lit. The only thing is that the whiteface on the tach just kind of turns black (or just gets very dark so you cant tell it is white) I imagine the digital cluster will be the same way, it'll stay colourful with whatever few colours it uses. |

In the AT, when you go to Sport Mode, the inner-dial does turn red. I don't believe this behavior exists on the MT car... But I could be wrong. https://cars.usnews.com/pics/size/77...a_GR_86_42.jpg There is also a "Snow Mode" https://cars.usnews.com/pics/size/77...a_GR_86_43.jpg Not sure about the infotainment. In my Series 10, the Panasonic unit doesn't turn off completely. Back to the digital gauges, it is likely something they could do. The screen is obviously capable of at least white, grey, orange, blue, and red based on the footage we have seen. Why there isn't more customization is good question. |
Right side is still a Monochromatic display so that at least won’t be turning red

I just wanna know if the new cluster will tell you how many miles you have left before hitting E. So annoying when cars don't have that.

Anyone know how these things hold up if you're wearing polarized sunglasses?

It’s too bad Toyota/Subaru didn’t match the backlighting of the gauge cluster to the rest of the interior when it’s night. It’s a small but glowing emission on a well constructed interior.
I suppose putting it into track or sport does give off a bit more red, but at night, the bright white is hard on the eyes. I wonder if you can dim the interior lights to lessen it. I wonder if there is a hack within the ECU to give off a red gauge cluster at night over the white like the pre refresh 1st gen cars. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
