Oil filler cap came off - oil all over - help

I changed the oil in my BRZ. Boneheaded move - I left the oil filler cap loose.

The cap came off, the car was driven around, and oil flew out everywhere in the engine compartment. :(

I lost slightly over a quart of oil. So by the time I noticed, the oil level was probably around 4.6 quarts. Car was not driven hard, mostly street driving with the missing cap. Questions:

1) Do you think I did any damage due to the low oil level?

2) What about any damage from driving with the open crankcase? Oil/air was blowing out the oil filler hole. Don't think anything got inside due to the outward pressure, but I changed the oil and filter again, just in case.

You're fine. Completely fine. Worst part is the mess. Blecch!

As long as you weren't driving around with your 'oil light' on, your engine was getting enough oil to prevent damage. Other than the mess, I wouldn't worry about it

Plus, your engine compartment now has a thorough coating of protection against corrosion....;)

I did it to my 240Z once in the middle of a road trip. Freaked me out. Worst part ended up being that I lost my original oil cap with the little elephant on it. :(

It will be OK.

We drove cars around for years with open crankcases - then someone invented the PCV valve - :iono:

I did it once with my Isuzu Rodeo before a family camping trip. Didn't notice until we were 350 miles away at our campsite. With the valve covers on the hemi style heads, didn't lose a single drop. I put a couple strips of duct tape over the hole and replaced the cap a week and a half later after we got home.

so, if it makes you feel any better, i went to change my oil today and left my fumoto valve open, and draining into the pan. i was so excited at how easy and mess-free it was, i completely forgot to close it when i went to re-fill the oil. had all of the 5-quart container poured in when i realized my mistake, but fortunately, it seems like i only lost a quart in the process.

Haha... I'm stupid afraid I'm going to do this someday. I laugh at my own paranoia every time I triple check that little valve.

this is one of the first cars that i actually enjoy changing the oil on, and the valve makes it even more enjoyable. i don't even need to drag out the cardboard! but of course, not using it every day i don't need to do it as often...
