Question: how to ship wheels?
 

I don't think this is too off-topic, since lots of folks seem to be selling their OEM wheels.

I've got a set of wheels w/ winter tires from my old Boxster I want to sell. There are several ads in this forum offering to wheel/tire combos shipped at very reasonable shipping prices, e.g., $100 to $150 for shipping.

My question is: who do you use for shipping? I've googled "freight shipping quotes", but got much higher quotes for a pallet loaded with 4 wheels (>$500!).

Also, does the shipping company provide the pallet, or is that the shipper's responsibility?

I work for a rather large shipping company, and have also personally shipped a lot of wheels, some with tires, some bare. For bare wheels, I always put them in in appropriately sized boxes individually. If the wheels weigh less than 30 lbs or so each, I'll sometimes strap or tape two boxes together so I'm only sending shipping two packages instead of four for a set of four wheels.

For wheels and tires I usually strap/tape two of them together, facing eachother, then put cardboard discs on the outside of each wheel/tire. If the wheels/tires are more than 35 lbs each, I'll usually ship them individually with thick cardboard discs covering each side of wheel, with foam between the cardboard and wheel face to minimize any scuffing.

I've always used UPS to ship wheels and tires in the past, and IIRC shipping a bare set of wheels was around $60-80, and shipping a set of wheels and tires $100-150. Most of the wheels and tires I've shipped have been on the smaller (14-16") and lighter side though, and obviously the larger and heavier the wheels/tires, the more shipping will cost.
