2013 FRS Engine Knock?
I recently went into a dealer to view a used 2013 FRS, 102k miles $12,800. The car looked very nice during the walk around, drove very well in the test drive. Unfortunately after warming the car up a tapping/knocking noise was observed (video linked below). The dealer advised he has extensively driven this car and never heard the noise. He insisted he would have it looked at right away by a mechanic to determine the cause. It is the next day now and he has called me and stated he got in touch with a mechanic at a scion dealership who informed him he should change the car to full synthetic 0w20 oil. He claims after the oil change the sound has been resolved and the car sounds great after 10 miles of driving so far. My question is; What does the sound in the video sound like, and could a swap to full synthetic oil fix it as he claims?

Video is not long enough to tell. The tapping is the DI pump and is a pretty normal noise.
Watch this if you want to know what rod knock sounds like vs normal FA noises. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2NkMAtjMSw |
I'd look elsewhere

First off, these engines make a lot of funny sounds. I'd suggest you ask the dealer if that car was subject to the valve spring recall and if it was, was the repair made. Yes, a longer video (since they changed the oil) would help us help you. |
@Dazzo it might be a bad clutch throw out bearing, which is a common noise that increases with RPM. I've experienced it twice on bad TOB's and they made quite a bit of racket and vibration and causes shifting issues. Did the clutch feel weird at all or were there any bad vibrations on acceleration and deceleration?
The throw out bearing is necessary to replace and are routine maintenance on these cars, there's a new upgraded TOB part that all owners should have upgraded to by now. I had my third TOB installed around 105,000 miles. The only normal noise you should hear from the engine bay are injector ticking noises and intake wooshing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-jbTufX9PQ |
