Stuck Odometer
Hello,
I recently bought used MY2020 Subaru BRZ Ts and i seem to have an issue: Odometer is stuck at 36 545km (22 708 miles) while car is still displaying speed, engine RPM and "Trip" distance correctly. No error codes are present. Cruise control is working. Is my instrument cluster damaged? I checked for possible loose connections. There is no warranty due to hte fact that the previous person serviced the car himself. some more info: When i was driving home the car still counted miles, the next day it stopped at some point. As i said before: all systems are working, speed is shown correctly as well as trip distance is shown properly. What may be the problem and how can i fix it? |
Where in the world are you? Because self maintenance doesn't normally void the warranty
Also, is your name Carmen Sandiego? |
Take the vehicle to a dealership and ask them if it is still under warranty. Won't cost anything to ask.
|
I already asked, well, it came from USA to Europe, it had not been in any accident, i paid for warranty transfer and papers i got said that it is not valid anymore because of "self maintenance". Dealership want me to pay for diagnosis and repair. The thing is, cars leave more broken than they arrive where i live, always something is broken or not how it suppose to be. My friend's car even had loose parts after valve spring recall.
And no, my name is not "Carmen Sandiego" :D |
Don’t fix it until you sell the car. 10 years from now you will have a car with 36k km on it.

A one year-old USDM car exported to Europe? Time to invest in a good scan tool that can access enhanced diagnostics. You need to verify the mileage recorded in the ECU, possibly the body control module or instrument panel control module. I'll bet that someone has electronically "rolled back" the odometer before it was sold and exported, and it has caused some sort of malfunction. It's actually a federal crime here in the States to do this, but if the new owner is abroad, there's not much backlash that will occur to the person because of it.
Or it may simply be some strange gauge malfunction. Either way, you should do some more research on the history of this car. You can register the VIN in the Toyota database to view it's repair history, even if you're not the original owner. You should access the US Toyota website though, not the EU website. Here is a link: https://www.toyota.com/owners Begin there and keep us informed, I'm curious as to what you find. |
Can you post a pic of the gauges?

I suggest you check the fuse that controls that circuit.
Then purchase an inexpensive code reader and read any codes. Unplug the negative side of the battery, drink a half a beer then plug it back in. Check for codes. OR Just don't worry about it - :iono: |
I think we see the root of the issue. That is not a US cluster. Whoever changed it out did not do it correct? Europe cluster is not compatible with a US car? The 2 may need to be married together?

I have not found solution yet, i'll keep you notified of any news |
Since it WAS counting distance, and the trip meter and speed are still working, it sounds like an internal issue, all those things are going to get calculated from the vehicle speed data coming in over CAN bus.
I guess the only thing you could try is disconnect both battery cables and short them together (keeping them away from the actual battery posts) and leaving it like that for a few minutes to actually kill the power and drain any caps that may be keeping computer memory alive. Fun anecdote: A few years ago a guy I know had a Dodge Journey and after a night of having left the lights on, the battery fell completely flat. Once it was jump started back to life, the odometer had actually reset to zero but incremented fine like nothing had gone wrong. All in all the car had lost about 30000km by accident. So these kinds of computer errors do happen sometimes |
