California Will Start Checking for ECU Tuning In Smog Checks

Saw that on another car forum. Strange that nobody reported this here yet...

https://www.carbibles.com/california...ks-this-month/

I'm happy to be in a state that mails me a renewal request, I pay it online and they mail me next year's sticker and that's it.

How will all the tuners handle this?

The best way to beat that is to purchase a used ECU, install it and do all of your flashing to that one, while you store your original one away. That way you can easily swap them out after putting the car back to stock for the smog test. I paid about $100 for mine.

Sounds like another useless band aid for the actual emissions problems of Cali. But then again, Cali also does a lot of things that don't actually fix their main problems.

So I wonder how many shops will be able to afford the machines to detect this. Also what if you flash back to a stock tune... Will be watching this closely. God I hate California for stupid shit like this

If you flash back to a stock tune AND complete a drive cycle, you'll pass. The 2nd part is the hard part if you have a FI kit that would pass visual inspection, but don't have a CARB approved tune for it. You're gunna be screwed. Either take off the FI kit and flash back to stock, or try to set a drive cycle on a stock tune with FI and risk your motor.

Guess I'll be reinstalling my supercharger every couple of years.

what's interesting is that this is in conjunction with the ICE ban in 2035. seems quite overzealous

It is overzealous because it's targeting <1% of their population and serves no purpose. Guess they've been watching too much Fast and Furious?

Maybe we should compile a thread for “friendly” i.e poor smog shops that can’t afford new equipment

i bet if one were to look into it, there's a number of california politicians that are having daily run-in's with pop tunes, leading them to believe that everyone does it...

Lmao I'd put a ban to that shit too if I heard it everyday.

California has led the way on a lot of important things - environmental and others. But, it is run by humans, and over reaching is part of our nature.

Edit: in this case, set an emissions standard and require everyone to meet it. End of story. Don't trust people? Do pop up spot checks. Hell they already do for DUI. If I got $10 for every time some CHP asshole had shined a 4 cell maglight in my eyes at 1 am at a sobriety check when I lived there, I could have afforded to stay. Of course, I'd have been doing a lot of night driving essentially blind.

No I get California "progressive" actions. But I'm pointing out it's another one of their overreactions that affects less than 1% of the population. Instead of them actually targeting ways to improve their emissions goals. There's a reason so many call California a nanny/Nazi state.
