World Premiere of All-New GR 86
  • Faithful to the fun to drive characteristic concept of its predecessor
  • Responsive and engaging with light weight, low centre of gravity and agile handling
  • 3rd model in GR sports car line-up, joining widely-acclaimed GR Supra and GR Yaris
  • New 2.4-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine delivers increased performance

The eagerly anticipated all-new GR 86 made its global debut today at a joint online event between TOYOTA GAZOO Racing and Subaru Corporation. Toyota’s latest sports car offering complements the GR portfolio, featuring the widely-acclaimed GR Supra and GR Yaris, as the third global GR model.

The new GR 86 inherits the key fun to drive characteristics of the original GT86, launched in 2012 and went on to sell over 200,000 units worldwide. It is expected to be the lightest four-seater coupé in the segment thanks to a wide range of weight saving initiatives such as the use of aluminium roof and body panels.

Powered by a new lightweight horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine which is increased to 2.4-litre displacement, the performance of the GR 86 is stepped up from its predecessor.

The dimensions of the new GR 86 are almost identical to the GT86, allowing the new model to maintain a low centre of gravity for enhanced agility. Torsional rigidity has also been increased by some 50% compared to the GT86 to deliver even sharper handling and steering ability.

Functional aerodynamic components such as the front air ducts and side rocker panels, among others, were developed from the model’s participation in motorsport, helping the GR 86 achieve expected best in class handling and stability.

The all-new GR 86 will be launched in Europe. More details will follow later this year.

Just beautiful ! Will trade in my gen1 for one! Now to decide which color...

I love the front bumper design but I can't get over that horrendous rear end. Otherwise, I like what I see and can't wait to see one in person!

I really like the new GR86 front end. Just wish they had different headlights to differentiate the two cars a tad more like they've been doing. Otherwise, I plan to look at one when they are out! :happyanim:

Yay, think it looks great and perhaps it was already discovered from the subie launch but I'm sure glad manuals didn't get inundated with the extra safety gear. I hope they bring Hot Lava back otherwise gonna be hard as hell to choose a color.

I don’t necessarily want eyesight but radar cruise control would be nice to have. VW has had a complete ‘eyesight-like’ system on manual cars since the introduction of the MK 7 GTI. That was a while ago.

None of these would make me ditch the manual though.

At some angles I see F type Jag in the GR86 front end

If you squint hard enough you can see almost any modern sports car made. The laws of physics mean there are a handful of aero designs that are the most effective. That so many cars share some of those lines is not coincidence. The designers can go for effect or radically different looks but in the end there will be a bunch of cars that are roughly the same.

I prefer it to mine. I never loved the first gen taillights shape

Same. They cut weirdly into the trunk lid and it was never really clear to me why. I even switched to facelift tails and then back again because they didn’t fix the problem in person.

It is certainly more mature and overall more cohesive. With the 1st gen, they kind of gave up at the rear either due to time or money constraints.

Although I admit to liking the "made in the basement" aesthetic. It certainly had a unique look.

But I'm not a fan of the side skirts with the GEN 2. That looks like an afterthought. Gen 1 is cleaner down the side.

The 2017+ refresh has way better taillights than the original release. Even if it does look somewhat similar to aftermarket offerings.

i feel like the first gen has more "character" to it, like an individual personality. The second gen is "Grown up" and now kind of like every other person in a suit.

Also...i want to see more colours. Red, White, Blue, grey/silver has been seen between the twins. Would like to see if the rest of the colour lineup is the same.
