Lapping in SW Ontario?

We’re currently moving to Chatham.
Are there any tracks offering Open Lapping in SW Ontario?
TMP will be over 2.5 hours from home so a more local alternative would be nice.

Ummmm.. TMP is the only thing southwest I've seen or heard of. So you may have no other options.

It's not 2.5 hours, but I come from Oshawa, so it's not far off, I also have Mosport though and the odd time shannonville.

When I lived in Chatham I did TMP and Grand Bend. Don't know of any others.
I think when it comes to doing track time you just have to be expecting to make a trip of it. How far do you go in order to snowboard/ski? I'd say motorsport is more niche than that.

I agree.
Currently only an hour from Burlington to TMP. I imagine a 2.5 hour trek from Chatham. I’m retired now so will have time to investigate Grand Bend. Not much detail on their website. No track map.

Haven't been to Grand Bend in many year but the track was always just sort of OK. Their big focus is the dragstrip so with the track being secondary it was never in the best of shape. May be totally the reverse now though.

They seem to do bike schools and events so the surface can’t be too bad. Narrow perhaps???

Grand Bend is fine, the back straight is 2 pieces, the racing surface is fine but the outer surface is an old runway from the 40s which is super rough if you end up on it (shame because the fastest line is right at the edge of it). They removed the motocross infield section, so it's pretty flat if you do manage to do some off roading there.

The track itself is pretty narrow, so there is only point by passing in 2 places officially, but you can get a car by in a few of the shorter straights if they're right on your tail.

I find it to be the better of the two tracks closer to London, the other being TMP, due to grouped lapping, attentive marshals, and EMTs on site. DDT is a hike for me, but definitely the most fun and best facility.

It's 8 hours for me from Boston to Mosport, and I'd do it in a heartbeat. You can manage 3.5hr.

Muskoka800 09-22-2021 05:14 PM

I’ve done two Monday all-day sessions at TMP this summer after the re-opening and plans to do this Friday if the forecast improves. Next Monday is our rain date.
Haven’t seen Grand Bend yet but will visit next week.
Car goes down soon for S/C install then tuning. May not get any more lapping days until 2022.

It's not that it isn't feasible/manageable, just driving 3.5-4 hours for a 9 am start at the track is not something I am fond of. Thus DDT becomes a 2 day trip with a night spent overnight closer to the track. Then 3.5 hours back home after the track day, 1.5 of which are GTA traffic even on a Saturday... no thank you! I like the track, but not enough to make the trek very often. Thus far I've been 3 times, 2x in 2020 and 1x in 2021, hopefully 2022 will be another 2 times as it is a fun track.

Yeah, GTA traffic is no fun. I grew up in KW and have spent my fair share fighting through it. 407 is pretty convenient for Mosport.

Next time you should consider proximity to good racetracks when choosing a place to live.

One can finance a whole race team with COVID era GTA real estate profit by moving away. Or retire. Lot’s of wrenching and track trip time available now. :happyanim:
