TPMS at highway speeds

Weirdest thing ever.. im on aftermarket wheels and randomly all of the sudden now after being on the highway at about 60 ish mph for about 10-15 min I get a TPMS light stays on solid... next startup it's gone and doesn't come back just beating around town, only at sustained highway speeds....

You don't happen to have a full size spare tire with a TPMS sensor in it?

ZDan 06-13-2021 01:09 PM

If the brains don't get a signal from one or more sensors, the light doesn't immediately come on, it waits about 15 minutes or so. If your lower-speed trips around town are short enough duration, the light may not come on. You might have a dead sensor.

One time is a fluke, 3 times is a pattern. Let it ride

I agree with you. :)

It's distance, not time - around 20 miles (might be 30 KM, which is 18.6 miles). Have the same with my summer set (no TPMS) vs. winter set (stock wheels with TPMS).

Then the TPMS light would blink at startup and persist for the drive, and then randomly (perhaps picking up the TPMS from the winter set in the basement?) would stop until the next time I'm driving more than 20 miles.

Get a scanner and check the batteries for the sensors?

Ultramaroon 06-14-2021 02:25 PM

Yup. Distance. My original sensors are in my winter wheels in the garage. I'm good to go until I pass 20 miles.

Those transmitters have some serious range! ;)

This seems to be one of those strangely inconsistent things with these cars. When I switch to my winter tires my light comes on within a block. When I go back to the summer ones with the sensors then it goes out as I am leaving the shop lot. I never have a delay in time or distance either time.

Where do you store your summers? Sounds like they're kept out of range.

At the shop about 20 miles away. But the light turns on about a block away from it when I go to the winters. It almost instantly goes off when I go to the summers. None of this driving for X distance stuff I keep seeing. Probably less than 50 feet.

I dunno, man. You're special.

I am not the only one that has said this. Both the FRS and the 86 did the same thing. I will try to remember to check distance/tie when I go back to the winters.

So lots of people have said that you're special? ;)

2013 with no TPMS sensors so I have no valuable input here. I wonder if there's a difference in light operation between subaru and toyota/scion or maybe pre/post facelift.

Actually TCoat, since you've had both pre and post you could speak to if there was any change when you switched cars (for toyota at least)
