Dashcam

For those who have them, have they been helpful in a crash?

saltywetman 05-20-2021 02:06 AM

only if you're not at fault lol

They are kinda nice if you have park mode available or can set a shutdown timer on it for when you take your car for service. with sound enabled you could potentially catch something such as dealership curbing your wheels or something and make them liable to cover the repair costs.

My experience going for service with a cam is they are aware if it spying on their work..

I always find it amusing to check footage after some service,
the usual routine is car startup followed by some swear words & cam getting unplugged…

My last service the tech did a road test & I was much relieved to see the tech driving
my car much easier and with care than I usually do…

I do have a feeling it could also incriminate me if an accident would arise.

Yes.

Car sidewiped me on the highway. Thankfully he pulled over. We exchanged contact info, I took pictures and left. I, being young and no one to teach me these things didn't call the cops to get a statement.

I filed a claim with his insurance but they needed his side of the story. They tried to reach out to him but he didn't pick up. I finally submitted the video evidence and it just so happens their insurance called me back and they managed to get in touch with him.

Brought my car into the dealer for the TOB recall a few years back. Reviewed the footage and the tech took my car to gas station for snacks/testing the TOB. Mentioned how crazy my key is (I did the shell case swap) and bunch of other mods in the car.

Another reason why I need to get one. This is why I do maintenance myself unless I bring it to a reputable shop.

Just curious, did you bring this up to the dealership?

Insurance companies will always, ALWAYS, contest your account of events (to lower the payout) unless there are witnesses or video proof.

Get one.

Very helpful when someone hit my daughter in her car.

The lady who hit here was trying to say that my daughter changed lanes and cut her off. the video clearly showed my daughter staying in her lane and the other lady coming flying up and cutting over at the last minute. Once the officer saw this and put it in his report her insurance company had no option but to accept fault.

I have one. It cost like $40. Quality isn't great except in sunny weather. I should get one that can read license plates better.

The great thing about the car is there is a power outlet in the glove box. You can push the cable into the headliner, remove the passenger side A pillar and run the USB cable down and along the side of the dash and into the glovebox. No need to do any other wiring and it is totally hidden.

I have not needed to use the dashcam. When I have checked it, I realized I say my thoughts outloud when driving. So I sort of hope nobody ever steals my dashcam and publishes the videos :P

I do maintenance myself as well but the TOB was an issue early on and covered by warranty. No way I am going to attempt to drop the tranny for the first time and try to do that myself when it's covered. Especially when it's my daily.

I didn't bring it up. Don't see it as a big problem. They do have to take cars out to replicate issues. If they were goofing off, hauling ass doing donuts and destroying my clutch then yes I'd bring it up.

Funny thing is a big performance shop around here got into the news because the tech wrecked the customer's car. The shop isn't taking responsibility and told the customer to use their own insurance because they signed the paperwork when the car was being worked on that they aren't liable for any damages done to the car, standard modifying/performance upgrade clause but they're stating that also covers car accidents.

Agreed.

I do the basic maintenance myself but when it comes to something like a TOB/Clutch change or anything else that requires extensive knowledge or specific tools, I would trust a specialist rather than myself. Brought mine in earlier this year for TOB/Clutch job and it was done in about 2 hours. If I did this myself with a few buds in my garage, it would've taken days.

As for that last part, I'd be furious :mad0260:
Very unfortunate for the customer. It would've been useful reading the fine print but how/why would someone anticipate something like this to actually happen is beyond me.

Took me and my brother about 8 hours to change the clutch as our first time. We took it a bit slow to drop the transmission. I replaced the TOB, Clutch Fork, Pivot and plates while I was in there.

Unfortunately the shop is still in business and won't address it. They made the news headlines as well and people are review bombing them like crazy. They just brush it off and just post that they received new parts or a new supra to work on etc. Really sucks as before this they were recommended for a tuning/dyno shop.

I used to drive 100 miles a day before the pandemic on my commuter car, and I can tell you dash cam is a MUST. I have been using the Yi dash cam that I bought a few when they were just $35, and the first one I bought was still in use, been 6 years now, still good. I am impressed.
