Selling an ECU
As some of you know, my motor blew, and I’m doing a K24 swap with a Haltech ECU that should replace the factory ECU. Can I sell the ECU, or is it locked or tied to my car in some way? If someone else can use it then do I need to reset it like selling a new laptop? If not then do I need to pull information off the ECU before selling it for any reason? If someone has a key fob and a Push-to-Start ignition, and I believe there is a transponder that sends a code to the ECU, then will their key need to be programmed into the ECU, and if so then what does that take? I believe Haltech can set up my key, but I don’t know how, yet I am not sure if I need to pull information off the ECU in Techstream to enter into Haltech?
I have a Harrop supercharger with DT and Harrop’s CARB tune. Is that transferrable to the new owner of the Harrop kit if I sell the ECU with the kit? They would still need a custom tune, but the CARB tune or DT tune could get them down the road, perhaps. If yes, but they don’t want the ECU, then is the ECU valuable to someone who could save money on the ECUTEK license that is on the ECU? If so then who can and can’t buy the ECU? My car is a 2013 BRZ manual, so who could swap or use my ECU on their car? Thanks in advance. |
i think it just works like that
the new owner will make the pairing procedure to his car and it will just work , and they guy will have your harrop tune and ecutek license in it Then of course is locked to ecutek and the guy needs an ecutek kit to make mods or flash Or you can turn ign on and flash a stock rom with your ecutek kit, so the guy will receive a stock unlocked ecu, but with a free ecutek license in it wait for steve for confirm |
Or do as i do .. i still keep all stock parts around, in case if i'd wish to revert to stock for selling, to have around stock-ish spares (it takes a long for many parts replacements to arrive, especially from over seas). Only downside - a bit less money (but rarely one selling used parts may get adequate cost) and used up storage space.

Yes you can swap ecu into new car fairly easily
see here https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102810 If its got ecutek licience in ecu dont change vin in ecu or you eill loose licience just swap in in as above, and you just have to put up with vin not being correct The incorrect vin can cause issues in some states during smog checks though if someone had same transmission car same year they could keep tune in ecu assuming they had same engine mods as you or bought all your bits if not they can still swap ecu and use ecutek licience and reflash with suitable tune for any year or transmission car with ecutek. but again dont change vin or you loose licience in ecu. |
