What does flashing hazard lights in passing mean?
Hey guys, I recently just got a 2015 Scion FRS as my first car. I like the sleek and petite design and feel like it suits a small girl like me. With that being said I know nothing about car culture lol.
As I was driving on the highway yesterday, there was another FRS that flashed his hazard lights 2 times as he passed me. What does that mean? Were they just appreciating that we have the same car? :D |

Probably saying hello. Or thought he beat you in a race, hard to tell if an FRS is racing or just trying to keep up with traffic

Probably just a hello. Usually people flash their lights to say hi, but either works.

A nice wave or flash in response is polite.
I can be especially exciting seeing another around here since they are so rare. I always wave. |

A flash, as in flash to pass, while overtaking someone? It's done just to get the attention of the driver being passed so they don't do anything unexpected like change lanes. I always flash to pass in my car. A flash from an oncoming vehicle usually means a moose or cops on the road ahead, around here anyway.
Just saw Hazards? Never mind. |

First of all, welcome. Never heard of flashing the hazards at someone, they're for... hazards. It may be some regional car dialect. Considering the FR-S/FR-S situation he was probably just saying hi. If he was saying hi, then he's going to be looking in his mirror, then a polite wave of the hand (open window) or a two-flash of the high beams should be a courteous enough response. |

Thanks guys :)

Flashing hazards can mean a lot of things. In a street race it can mean "I won" or be a challenge. Truck drivers will do it to say "Thank you" (after another truck flashes their highbeams to tell them its safe to merge in for example). In the case of the same type of car passing by I would say your instincts are correct and it was probably just a recognition.
