Formula Cross?

Hey Guys,

Stumbled across this in my travels on the internet, seems like a cool idea but I wonder if it will actually catch on.

Any opinions?

It's a cool little thing, but are people really looking for an intermediate step from quads to rally cars? Also, there's a lot of mention of racing (including a lot of dropped names that probably have no ties to this vehicle) but is there a race series for these things?

I think I am going to agree with you. It seems like the entry level price is a bit steep for the folks that this is supposed to be marketed towards.

It would be a neat idea if there were local clubs and land to set up races. I guess only time will tell as it appears the race series is still pending development.

The sequential shifter and 500 lb weight is kind of enticing though!

please for doing your homework gentlemen

There is no name dropping Rhys Millen Motorsports (yeah the guy who just set the fastest ever Pikes peak rally time, in a RWD Drift car) developed these for a low cost of entry Rally Cross series,

Yes there is an actual series being formed,

Yes there is a demand for cheap rally cross vehicles, most people can't afford 50K to build a car to see if they like it/can hang.

There have been demos all over of this thing for the last year or so and they were testing them at the PP rally this weekend too.

Honestly they look like an absolute blast

They used to run motorcycle engine midgets at the speedway. They were popular for a couple years then disappeared. The real key will be if there is enough places to race to make it worthwhile for people to get involved and stay interested.

From their website ('Racing' tab on their navigation bar): "With some of the biggest names in the sport of rally cross such as Sebastien Loeb, Marcus Grönholm, Tanner Foust, Ken Block, Brian Deegan and Rhys Millen, Formula Cross is the perfect building block to develop driver skills and perfect car control"

If all those guys were involved with the development, they should hire a writer that can make that clear on their website. I'm betting they left it intentionally vaguely worded because they want the paragraph to read as if those guys got their start in Formula Cross.

I like new stuff and I think this thing is cool, but don't claim this is the way to get your kid into the xgames when there isn't even a race series for them yet.

ummm.....sorry but I think they are assuming that anyone with the money to play has some knowledge of what is going on in motorsports, and quite possibly would understand that a "brand new product" couldn't have given veterans of the sport their start...

If you had read the paragraph you are quoting you would have realized they are advertising the feeded series they are working on creating for next season, by they I mean the people that were "name Dropped"

I have no reason to believe that Rhys didn't call all his friends for input while designing this chassis/platform, why should you?

AJUSA.com 08-13-2012 08:35 PM

Those are not only his competitors, those are his friends.

This car/class is designed to be a feeder series to the quickly growing (In the USA) sport of rallycross in which everyone of those names competes - I am sure those names have tested the car and given feedback to Rhys.

That price is extremely low for a turn key race car in any series btw. That is trophykart price (little kids race series).

I didn't go to the website because I didn't care about the thing. I was curious. I wanted more information.

The website didn't deliver on the information front - leaving me to interpret their marketingspeak namedropping session however I wish.
