Car won’t start/ take out of park

Hey guys. So I have a 2016 automatic BRZ. Currently I am unable to turn the car completely on, and am unable to take the car out of park.

I’ve done two things that could have possibly created the issue. Replaced the key fob battery in one of my key fobs and also replaced the side marker bulbs.

After replacing the key fob battery I was unable to have the car recognize the fob i.e. not getting the car to lock or unlock via the buttons on the fob. However, when I placed the fob in front of the push button start the car went into auxiliary mode and then I was able to start the car.

After replacing my side marker bulbs, same day. I tried to turn the car back on and the car would go into auxiliary mode but would not engage the starter and crank the motor. Also I cannot take my car out of park. I brought out my other key fob I know that works, and the car has the same issue.

My steering wheel is locked, and my brake lights work. On my working key fob I can still unlock and lock my car. I checked my open flash tablet and have thrown no errors. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Also. When getting in and out of my car the automatic window will not go back up and while locking the car with the key fob that works the horn sounded really weak.

have you tested your battery with a volt meter? have you load tested the battery?

So I ended up jumping the car and it turned over and worked. I’m not sure why it happened tho. Maybe I need a new battery soon? Thanks for the idea soundman much appreciated!

Now I gotta figure out this dam key fob issue [emoji23]

if something is left on to drain the battery, a new car battery ain't going to fix the root cause of the problem.

get the battery on a car charger, and revisit the entire issue after the cars battery is fully charged.

I’ll try that out, thanks!

You weren't on your original 2016 battery were you?

i'm still on my original 2014 battery...

it was recently starting a little hard, but then my handy dandy harbor freight charger has a 'restore/repair battery' option(likely just a a/c waveform desulfate cycle to break down plate deposits). ran it through the cycle, and it starts just the same as a new battery.

The battery you put into the fob is probably no good. Or you got it upside down?

The battery is brand new, I’ll try and see if I put it in the wrong way. I wouldn’t put it past myself for doing something like that lol

"Brand new" for these batteries can be hard to confirm. Some of them seem to sit on the shelf for a long long time. I have had cases where I have gone through 3 to get one that was good.

And as sad as it seems, inexpensive "Brand new" batteries are often counterfeit...
