Toyota 86 Fuel Consumption
Hey guys so I recently bought a 2019 Toyota 86 GTS used from a dealer. I drive pretty well by always shifting below 3k and coasting whenever I can. However the gauge shows that I do 10.5L/100km. I drive half suburban and highway. Also when I unscrew the gas cap it makes a hissing noise? Is this normal?

Yes.

Its better you calculate by filling up full tank and calculating how many kms you covered.
Hissing noise is normal. Don't stress about that. And reset the fuel estimation gauge with every fill up. It will be more precise this way. |
Yea I have been. Thanks.

It is the total opposite to what you would intuitively think is happening. |
For your driving habits 10.5L/100 seems high. That's around 22mpg.
I get 9.5L/100 or 24mpg average in the winter with more idle time and long warm ups. |

It's actually improved over time, even though the majority of the travel is the same roads. I posted about that earlier today (and on a couple of previous occasions in my owner's journal). |

My morning commute is mostly highway. I live 1 minute from the highway so I end up idling my car for 5 minutes in the morning so I don't jump on with a stone cold engine when it is -10°c of colder. That's why I find it odd I still manage better mileage in my worst possible conditions than his regular. In the summer I average around 28mpg under the same mix of driving. |
I usually get between 29-30 for my average and I live in a stop and go city. 22 seems a bit low to me unless you're sudden stopping and stomping the gas at every stop, could also be the gas you're using. Lower octane gas usually gets lower milage for me from what I've noticed the few times I've used it

When I park the car in the garage and car shuffle I can set off right away without issue. it's when it sits in the driveway in temperatures -10c and below. Once it gets to -15c the clutch pedal is spongy on startup and takes 2-3 minutes idling to feel normal. it doesn't shift smoothy in those conditions until the fluid warms up. |
Let’s discuss the other issue that was mentioned. A few people said that the hissing was normal, and it usually is in most circumstances.
We know the hissing noise is caused by a pressure differential between the fuel tank and atmosphere. When one unscrews the cap, the two pressures equalize, and if air is sucking INTO the tank when you unscrew the cap, THAT would be considered normal. However, if pressurized fuel vapors are escaping OUT of the tank during pressure equalization, and THAT is what’s causing the hissing noise, then you have a problem with your emissions control system. |
On my AT, I get 33 with plenty of highway commuting. If I use it to do some spirited runs it dips to 30 and once 28. Never seen 22.

Are those Imperial liters?

Tires make a difference. I made an extreme change from the stock tires to sticky summer tires on 18x9.5 rims and immediately lost almost 20% off my fuel economy. |
if you're driving a stick, low 20s is very normal if you are hooning around in the city. On average, I usually get about 23 mpg but I find that it pretty easy to achieve 30+ mpg if you are driving on the highway. Just the other day I drove out to a casino a couple hours away and when I checked my average after I got home it displayed 32 mpg (reset before the trip ofc). The best MPGs I got was when I had an automatic FRS though, it was pretty hard to dip below 25 mpgs even though I was usually in M mode lol

i dont think i've ever gotten below 24 mpg, i average 26mpg. Before the supercharger and before i switched out the prius tires it was an easy 30mpg cruising at 80 mph. 30 minute commute, about 10-15 minutes of it being city, the rest highway.

My best has been 40.51MPG which was on a roadtrip where I filled up right at the highway, drove 319 miles nonstop and filled up as soon as I got off the highway. At that rate, I could have gone another 200 miles before needing to fill up. |
