White smoke, gas smell, and water out exhaust pipe
 

Whats going on 86 Fam,

Got an issue that is driving me bonkers.

So, I spun a rod bearing in my old motor and replaced it.

I got the turbo rebuilt by precision, I installed a used motor from a salvage yard with very low miles, I replaced my oil cooler and upgraded the radiator.

Now I have persistent light white smoke coming out of my exhaust. Upon start up, my exhaust sputters quite a bit of clear, watery looking liquid. Way more than it ever has.

The white smoke starts immediately after start up, and does not go away, no matter how long I drive the car.

I have had two mechanics smell the smoke and both say it smells like unburnt gas.

I have monitored by fuel trims, both ST and LT at idle, and both are spot on, right around -+1.

I have monitored my AFR, both on a wideband gauge, and on the OBD2 reading. My AFR gauge reads a hair rich, perhaps 14.3-14.6, but the OBD2 reading is spot on, 14.7 at idle.

The white smoke does not linger, it dissipates rather quickly.

I tried to do a leak down test, but both spark plug hole adaptors from two different kits stripped out before making it 1 full turn. Yes, i was using the correct adaptor.

I completed a combustion leak test using the blue fluid filled turkey baster, and no exhaust gases were present in the coolant system.

My thoughts:

Leak down test would be wise, taking it to a shop in two weeks.
Stuck open fuel injector, causing excess fuel to be dumped into the cylinders, causing the white smoke.
Bad fuel pump??? Probably not

**UPDATE** 3/26/21

Took my car to an engine shop and they believe that under boost pressure, I am floating the heads, causing coolant to enter the combustion chamber, leading to the white smoke. They are going to upgrade the head gasket and install ARP head studs.

Turbo water cooled? Might be leaking into turbo. Excess gas didn't make sense because of Afr reading

White smoke=coolant, Head gasket?
Unburt fuel/rich=black smoke. Find new mechanics they have no clue what they are smelling.
Blue smoke=oil. Blue and white smoke look similar.

Leakdown is a good idea. What you're describing, particularly with the volume of water you have coming out the exhaust makes me suspect head gasket. Does the exhaust have a sweet(ish) odor? That would be another plus for the HG theory.

Not having smelled anything "sweet" before, that was the reason i had my friends check out the smell. Neither thought it was coolant.

I am taking the car in to my subaru mechanic in two weeks, so will report back as the conversation progresses.

I would assume it can't be the fuel pump or injector as the issue, as you would see this as problem in the logs you are monitoring. Head gasket is the big suspect here. Interesting that the white smoke persists continuously. Not sure if you're driving it around at the time or not, but have you checked your oil level to see of any changes?

Also after the engine is cooled, open up the radiator cap and if it smells like exhaust fumes in there then for sure its HG.

Don't ask me how i know, but with another car. :)

Did the intercooler get cleaned out?

I don't understand your question.

Intercooler did not get cleaned. Would it/does it need it?

I drove the car about 1k miles after installing the new/used motor and saw no signs of oil dropping.

I did noticed a hazy swirl mixture in my oil when I drained it at 1k miles.

Interestingly enough, the car appears to be smoking more after changing the oil.

Does your new oil have a different viscosity than the last?
