Humming sound after modifications. Please help me.
 

This is driving me insane enough to sell the car. I'm so done with it.

Recently I modified my car.

Installed the SPC Adjustable Lower control arms, new Konig Hypergrams, brand new pilot sport 4s tires, and Tein Flex Z coilovers. Lowered it an inch.

Alignment was 0.05 toe out in the front each side, and 0.05 toe in in the front each side.

The day after I got my tires, one of them was punctured. It was running at about 15 psi (not completely flat at all) and I drove it 3 blocks to the nearest tire shop by my house to get it repaired.

A week or so later I noticed a humming sound. I feel like its coming from the front passenger side but it could be from the rear and my right ear is picking it up.

Its a hummmmmm hummm hummmmmmmmmmmm hummm, kinda whirring, high pitched sound that's barely audible but I can definitely hear it.


- It doesn't change with speed. It comes on at about 20kph and its consistent in frequency and volume

- It doesn't change with turning, or changing lanes

- Its hard to tell if it changes with road surface type, if it does its very subtle.

- I feel like it changes a bit when I go over a bump, but I'm not sure, its very quiet.

- Changing the tire pressure didn't help.

- It doesn't change when coasting, it doesn't change with acceleration, it doesn't change with braking either

- I feel like it gets quieter once I get over 100 KPH.


I've heard everything from its my alignment, or that the SPC bushings are harder and i'm hearing the rear diff.

Any thoughts?

Maybe get your wheels rebalanced or I'd inspect the hub assembly. Maybe a worn wheel bearing? Take it back to the shop that performed a the work.

Sounds to me like a bearing, almost sounds like you had a piece of metal stuck on the rotor. But like @FLIPDADY said, get them aligned/balanced and see if the shop missed something.

It might be also something simple as slightly bent during work on suspension/wheels dust shield around brake rotors that drags a bit.
Does that humming volume changes depending on which side turn you take? In that case imho high chance forwheel bearing being culprit.

As I previously mentioned, there's no way to get the frequency and loudness of the humming to reliably change.

It doesn't change when changing lanes or turning. It does't change when going faster or slower. It doesn't change under acceleration or braking. It's just kind there and its frequency and loudness is completely random. BUT the car needs to be moving over 30kph to hear it but after that its consistent more or less.

Also its not hum hum hum hum hum
Its more like hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm huuuuuuumm huummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm It's totally random.

Post video of the noise. If all else fails, get louder exhaust or stereo.

Did you install the parts yourself?

I had the e-brake line bend the little brackets such that they would rub against the wheel in some situations. I would be checking if anything is rubbing against the wheel or tyre.

Rotate the tire that got repaired to the back. It could be an issue with a wheel out of balance, the tire being patched... if the sound follows you will know why
