Even a bad sub like the oem one you can get as an option makes it sound a lot better.

I disagree to a point, if you have the base frs non gps version, yes replace that pos. But if you have the brz one, it's a polished turd but ok, still a turd though.

Oem speakers, again if you have base frs set up, yep. Even the premium brz can barely pass.

Oh and FYI the "factory" sub is made my an aftermarket brand Kicker along with its amp. It was not an in-house brand. Then again..... it's the same sub they use on their $150 generic sub/box combos. But sell if for $400+ because the "custom" fit enclosure. :bonk:
Oh even for the luz.... sold on Walmart.

Not sure how else to spend that much...
Also not convinced a sub is needed. Good door driver choice will go as low and sound better than the free air setup being discussed.

There are no "in house brands," they all have them manufactured for them at a specific price point. The BRZ head unit is still absolute garbage for sound quality.

And that was my exact point about the sub. Any sub will make it sound better. Believe me, I know how bad that optional sub is, the person I bought my car from thought is was so bad he unplugged it. After wrapping a few towels around it the sound is acceptable, but literally anything a person can buy aftermarket will be better.

Even a $200 head unit will make the stock speakers sound better. Not I'm going to spend $3000 better, but so much better than stock.

Now I'm trying to build a $10k audio install in my head...

Not even HAT stuff costs that much! I think the best I can do without searching out unicorn blood type stuff is about $5-6k...

It looks like there’s a spot in the middle where they stamped out a spot for a 6.5 inch speaker. I’m a sound quality kinda guy and would like to avoid even a small sealed enclosure in the trunk if possible. The sweetest system I’ve ever heard was in a young installers Jetta sedan. It had separates in the front doors and a couple 8” subs in the shelf behind the back seats. He was running quality class A/B amps driving high end Focal speakers (not utopia). Just wondering if anyone has gone free air and their thoughts...

I didn’t try the rear deck, if I did it would be 6x9s. I wouldn’t wAnt to block anything going into the back seat gotta fit the golf clubs in the back of the poor mans Porsche somewhere.... what I did was put in a cerwin Vega spare tire sub. I spliced into the rear amp for remote and high level inputs, converted to RCA with a filter to deaden the potential buzzing. That with a pair for RF 4inch in the dash have made me wonder about the deep jbl door speakers and upgraded 4ch amp and custom mounted 5.25 in the back seat that I am thinking of.... it sounds great the little sub takes ZERO trunk room, and fits perfect.
