Wow! Turned 4,000 miles. No problems!

I just turned 4,000 miles on my 14 month old 2020 Hakone Edition. This is after averaging 13,000 miles/year for the last 10 years on my prior 2015 FR-S and 2012 Yaris SE. Obviously the pandemic has had a huge effect as did the fact that I still had my FR-S for the 2019-20 winter season.

However, no problems whatsoever. Now that it is finally well broken in, I am quite sure that the 2020 has a bit more oomph and it is absolutely smoother, quieter, and free of creaks and groans that were with my 2015 FR-S from the beginning.

Congrats.
That would be a real accomplishment if it was a VW.
But a Toyota should easily go 100,000 miles with no problems.

Truthfully speaking though,an FR-S is more Subaru than Toyota in practially every singe respect.

True enough. The only real problem with my 2015 FR-S was a seeping passenger side valve cover. Lots of burnt oil smell off the exhaust. Got repaired at the 60K service when they also replaced the spark plugs. It also had the "rear package shelf body squeak" that many have reported. That never really went away. I drove it for 73,000 nearly trouble free miles before selling it to my nephew who is enjoying it immensely. He has already done a full exhaust and tune and plans to track it in the near future.

You have a point..... makes me think if I buy another sporty car next year I'll seriously consider a Lexus RC coupe instead of another twin. The 2022 86/BRZ is promising but not different enough (same problem as the Nissan 300 & 350 and it got very stale). Like the Supra, I wish they would wholly engineer & produce these cars.

I know badge engineering saves money but I'm afraid of inheriting BMW and Subaru issues (this scares customers).

Case in point, the Scion tCs are bullet proof with their Camry 4 cylinder engines (although some were affected with excessive oil burning like their Camry counterparts -but taken care of by Toyota).

Junk ?? Please elaborate ... someone bought your junk (in the trunk).

Creaks will eventually happen, maybe not at 5k miles .... but 50k .... 100k , if you have the car long enough.

All this rice cake talk . IMO , for the dollars FRS /BRZ in MT '14+ is great bang for the buck. Otherwise, if there is an extra $15k- 50k to spend, I'd go for a Cayman S or R ( '10-'12 ) , or a C2S , C4S 997.2 ( 2010-'13). Otherwise, wouldn't want anything else "sports car" , not much else appeals to me , dollar for dollar.

Carvana bought my 6mt 2013 FRS with valve recall done and 52k miles for $15k... I bought it for $16k with 22k miles... This used car market is for suckers and I took advantage of that.. I could never have unloaded it to an individual for that price.. prob closer to $10k

As for reliability, I came from Hondas and Toyotas (true Toyotas and not a Frankenstein like the 86)... First car ever to have the TOB fail on me before 50k miles.. also had little issues here and there that were just annoying....also, I would not refer to the FRS/86/BRZ as a sports bar.. it's slow AF.. fun on the corners, but still slow AF

The ND Miata us a way better value dollar for dollar, esp the 2019+ ones

Adam_L 01-31-2021 04:36 AM

OK, it's not a sports car , it's a GT car ... and probably the best drift car the last 25 years.

There will always be faster , something faster.

As long as you have fun driving it , and it doesn't cost a arm/leg to maintain /insure , then to me that's what matters.

Throwout bearing issues for the first 4-5 model years, and so far valve issues only on the first model year.

I'm pretty familiar with all the issues that plague the other current models in the Toyota lineup and the twins are made so much better, trust me.

Everyone is so spoiled these days. Most brands offer small turbocharged engines in small cars that can easily go 0-60 in less than 6 seconds. All with traction control and most can practically drive themselves. All for less than $30,000. Our cars are sooo slow. It takes over 6 seconds to go 0-60 on a stock car.

Twenty years ago they would have been the fastest cars on the road!
OK, maybe thirty years ago.
Give me a break. I'm old.

i think a lot of people like the lack of thought most other cars take to go straight to jail and do not pass go.

i've never had a problem merging at no less than 80. my main problem is trying to remember to keep it at least under 100. i get lost in making the motor sing to redline in every gear, and suddenly that big 1 is flashing on the dash!

albert 02-01-2021 03:12 PM

Yea, COVID really clamped down on the drives. I got my 2013 in early Oct last year and got 7K miles so far, but I also live in sunny CA... made a lot of excuse to drive home-to-home loops. Should be thinking of oil change any day now. lol :)

Yes!!! Mine goes everywhere, even when the Subaru's I see around are the AWD version. Just like how I ride my BMW sportbike, like its adventure brothers, it goes everywhere.

With you on that. I remember having fun with a 120-HP 1994 Honda Civic.

It's also that driving technique that's forgotten with the small-turbo, lower-RPM-help engine people. Need to build up the power by keeping the RPM higher. It's okay to do so, in fact, it's a good way to enjoy the car.

Keep the BRZ/FRS/86 above 4K-5K RPM, it'll be the happiest, most responsive, precise thing. Think it doesn't have enough power? Turn off the TC, especially in wet. On that note, better not or disclaimer: use at your own risk. :)

24 years ago my first car was a 10 year old Cavalier w/ 190k miles on it that came new from the factory with 90hp and a 3-speed slushbox (if it still had 75hp I would be amazed).
Slow car fast offers a lot more opportunity for fun than fast car slow. Even our 200hp is over the limit of being completely usable. I know it doesn't sound like much when bench racing a modern mini-van, but I'll never understand the "slow" reputation the twins get.
