JRSC CARB Factory Tune for 2017 - 2019?

Howdy,

I'm shopping for a BRZ to use as a (California-legal) weekend track car. I read on this forum and saw a lot of support for the JRSC and Edelbrock SC's. I was hoping to buy a 2019 model for sale at a local dealer and install the CARB-level JRSC. But as I dug in, I saw that they only offer the factory tuned CARB certified variant for 2013-2016.

Does anyone have more info on why this is and whether a 2017-2019 tune might be made available?

I searched and found two threads, [1] suggesting that they are still waiting to release this and [2] where a member recommended the JRSC for this scenario (perhaps they didn't realize it doesn't have CARB for 2017-2019)?

Thanks much for any info on this.

I had no idea about this because previously I've always driven an older than 8 years car. Thank you.

If I wanted to get the JRSC for a 2019 with the best chance of passing smog when it is finally due (say 6 years out), is the correct thing to do to buy the pre-tuned 2017 variant? Or would that not work because it's designed for a different ECU?

I called JRSC and spoke with them, their customer service rep was super helpful. Here is what they said:

- They submitted their CARB paperwork to get approved so they can offer the SC with a tune, however CARB has been super slow at approving requests and they are unclear when this will happen.
- To my other question, you can't use the 2013 - 2016 tune with 2017+, you need to get the tune it yourself kit.
- If they later release their CARB-approved tune, you could buy just the tune (these are currently $499).

Given all of this I think I'd probably get the 2019 and just wait until the CARB approval happens.

It's not a matter of if, but when. Don't hesitate to purchase a kit.
