Toyota FT-86 vs. Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy

The Toyota FT-86 must beat this:

Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy

http://img.turbo.fr/04347900-photo-n...r-s-trophy.jpg

Specs:

2.0l Turbo I4
265 PS
360 Nm
FWD, LSD, 6MT
1350 kg
0-100 km/h: 6,0 sec
V-max: 254 km/h
N-Ring: 8:08 min (19" Bridgestone Potenza RE050A)
Price: 35.500 €

For me the Toyota FT-86 rivals are:
-Audi TT-S/RS
-BMW Z4 sDrvie35is
-BMW 1 Series M E82
-Porsche Cayman S/R
-Lotus Exige / Supercharged
-VW Scirocco R
-Seat Leon Cupra FR
-Renault Mégane R.S.
-Alfa Romeo 4C (not yet out)
-Mini Coupé Cooper S JCW (not yet out)

Nothing under. The Toyota better be fast right out of the box.

Man are you really comparing these expensive cars to something that is expected to debut in the low 20's??? You could buy two of FR for the price of that Renault.

He's just another "OMG I WANT A CORVETTE" type of person on this forum. Lol. Asking too much for too little. :>

:word: You'd be looking at a lot of aftermarket upgrades to get it to compete with a lot of the cars on that list. By all means, shoot for the moon. But, I don't think this thing is going to be like the new GT-R which laughs at some of the cars above it's price point. It's like asking for a Corvette for the price of a Malibu.

I want to buy a Jet fighter for the price of a Toyota Camry. Or else!!!!

is that Renault a shared chassis? looks a lot like Ford Fiesta competitor, but i dunno i haven't done any research on any of that stuff.

toper 06-17-2011 03:28 PM

that renault should compete with Mazdaspeed3 or Ford Focus RS, same Turbo/fwd/compact configuration.

Might as well put the Nissan 370z on that list too.

There is one thing I really hate about the FT-86: it is CHEAP. Performance has nothing to do with expense, except if to talk about aluminium, CF and such. I think it is rather the cars I put on the list that are far to expensive for what they are worth. A Cayman S costs nearly as much as an M3 E92. An Audi TT-RS is cheaper than an M3 E92 but faster than it on almost all tracks. I hope Toyota will offer two versions of FT-86:
-FT-86: CHEAP
-FT-86RS TRD: KILLER

Again:

Reanult Mégane R.S. Trophy
N-Ring: 8:08 min
35.500 €

BMW 1 Series M Coupé
N-Ring: 8:15 min
50.500 €

A cheaper car can beat a more expensive one.

If the FT-86 is all about being CHEAP, then I thing I am mistaken, it is not the right car for me.

Why? I am ready to pay 35.000 € for a 1000-kg-two-seater-rear-wheel drive-300-PS-naturally-aspirated-high-revving-flat4-front-engine. Do you know anything of such a car? Reminds me very much of the FT-86, but then I really want it so. I see I have alot to moddify in order to make it faster than all of those stock cars. And I am not fool, I am not talking about being faster than a Porsche 911 or a Ferrari. I just want a nice small sportscar.

RRnold 06-17-2011 06:49 PM

That sucks that VW didn't bring the Scirocco back to the US but damn 33,475 Euros=48K USD is probably the reason why!

Damn, you guys are getting raped down there in Europe when it comes to buying a car!

Ryephile 06-17-2011 07:00 PM

Since us poor sods in the USA don't get any of the hot [insert most cool cars here], this comparison is irrelevant for me. Factor in the Renault is FWD and likely way more expensive and it's totally irrelevant, IMO.

Matador 06-17-2011 07:13 PM

RS Trophy? lollolol... not gonna happen. That car is downright mean. No way a stock standard 86 is gonna beat it, anywhere, much less around the ring. At a drift competition yeah... but that's it.

yikes...if i was looking for a small Japanese dedicated sports car..id wait for Mazda and Nissan to pump out their old power houses or a supra successor.

True, cheap does mean less. But where we cut manufacturing costs does matter as well. Maybe we are getting the best bang for our buck with the 86..maybe not. If Scion developed the car inhouse...i think it would be a completely different kind of cheap...vs Toyota/YAMAHA/SUBARU/TRD/STI kind of cheap.

What sucks in this day and age..because of the economy in the past 10-15 years, our selection of entry level Japanese sports cars have dwindled down to nothing.

in the 90s...we have the all for roughly 20-45k
Rx7/supra/300zx/evo/wrx/skyline/silvia/Celica/FTO/GTO/eclipse/IntegraR/MX5/MR2

today for the same price we get...
370z/EVO/WRX/MX5

and in the coming years...the EVO and WRX will be phased out a bit from their norm...with EVO possibly going green..and the Impreza chassy bulking going into mid/full-sized sedan territory.

Whats left for us looking for a good Japanese sports car? right now...it just doesnt exist..and the FT86 is going to be on the lower totem poll of the gap left over from the absence of real sports cars.
