Might be worth looking on crutchfield for headunit fitment. Once you punch in year/model it will recommend stuff that fits.
I'm second guessing my decision since I don't need android auto, and I have the screen turned off on the oem unit 99% of the time anyways

I definitely failed at BF sales. The exhaust was worth it, since I saved just over $100. But Its backordered til February.

Traded the OEM trunk liner for some STI Style skirts that look like they'll fit with layered double sided tape. Also installed the Blitz gauges into the TRD meter trim.

Went to the US for the holidays and came back with an Autopower half cage/roll bar. Going to paint it white once the weather warms up. Also got a reverse lockout from Aliexpress for like $3. Metal + no logo, and wayyyy cheaper than the offerings from Raceseng/Perrin.

Over the weekend I picked up a JVC KD-X270BT headunit + Scosche wiring harness from Crappy Tire and set it up for install. The harness will be trimmed down and all excess wires will be capped off in a more permanent way once in the car. As for mounting, I am considering just stashing it in the glove box, as music volume can be controlled via phone using Bluetooth/AUX. This option is TBD.

Some interior tuning over reading week. I've never liked the leatherette in this car, so this is phase 1 of removing it. Still left to do are the knee pads and door speaker trim.

Haven't updated in a while so here goes...
Car is in body shop jail at the moment so no new driving or parts install updates. Plan is to pull out the smushed bit, then primer and seal everything so that the car can be wrapped. While this is being done, the windshield is going to be pulled and the roof line rust will be repaired. Since the windshield is coming out, it is getting replaced.

Parts purchased for the rebuild thus far:
-used OEM rear bumper
-used OEM rear crash bar
-Misc. plastics (tail light trim, tail light gaskets, clips, brackets etc)
-Blitz exhaust tip

https://i.imgur.com/M3RohDt.jpg

Friend also gave me Blitz radiator hoses for my birthday a few months back :D. When these go in I'll do a full coolant flush with fresh OEM coolant, and a new OEM thermostat.

Bodyshop jail updates:
Trunk is pulled out, new bumper is installed. Next is to fix the quarter panel and pull the windshield for the roofline rust to be repaired

Also have a metric butt ton of cosmetic mods arriving soon. Excited for some aero, even if it isn't the most functional... more on that later (spoilers in parts list in post 1 ;) )

Poor exhaust tip. Gonna straighten that out a bit or leave it as a battle scar

Like I've said a few times, that's definitely the most upsetting part of this ordeal.
For now, it is staying but replacement tipS are coming. After emailing with Streeter Co, I learned Blitz doesn't sell replacement tips for this catback (riveted). So unfortunately I was left with ordering two new tips (clamp on style), and those should arrive some time next month. :bonk:

That poor poor roofline. I am 100% convinced I did it by careless scrapping. Now I leave abut a 4 inch untouched section out of fear of doing it again!

It was shocking how fast it rusted though Obviously the roof does not receive the same rust resistance as the lower body panels.

I mentioned this theory to the guy fixing it, and he thinks it's a combination of rock chips and the scraping that cause it. Says he sees it pretty often on the high highway km cars that come through his shop.

Well that helps a little.
The Hakone is still chip free up there though.

NoHaveMSG 05-17-2022 08:11 PM

That is a bummer. I saw a slightly crunched car on instagram, didn't put 2+2 together that it was yours.

I'd run the exhaust tip smashed but that is just me :D

A friend with a 13 also has some pretty bad rust issues from untreated stone chips.
By how you describe highway traffic it's similar to traffic here, I've had to touchup 4-5 stone chips along the roofline since buying mine. They start to rust pretty quickly too.

The couple of chips on the lower body never went beyond some light surface rust. I deliberately left a larger one on the front fender untreated for the 5 years I had the car. It looked like it was a couple of weeks old even after 5 winters. They did a great job of making the panes rust resistant where it needed to be.

More updates: roofline rust has been ground down completely and then fixed. Fresh windshield to be installed next. Black Vivvid roof wrap has been ordered from Sean @ Subieland, going to give it a shot wrapping the roof. Still waiting on vinyl samples for the 3M wrap that appears to be a close match to lava (G364). Hopefully it is a good match, I'll probably do that on the rear end. Otherwise, black it is.

More Bodyshop Jail

Progress update: tail lights go back in without an issue, bumper lines up with the fender without gaps, and the trunk lid to quarter panel gap has been fixed. Body filler added to the quarter panel, custom "flare" until it's sanded down.

Probably the final updates from body shop jail before I get the car back:
Roofline rust repaired and then sprayed black along the edge for the black roof wrap.

Fresh windshield and seals

And finally the rear end is car shaped and all sealed up.

Be good as new soon. Did you settle on a livery?

Indeed good as new

As for the wrap:
We'll see if Instawraps ever sends me a sample of 3M 1080/2080 G364... I ordered one a few weeks back and it never arrived, reached out to ask for an update and got a refund without any response. Ordered another and it's looking like the same situation, I suppose they don't want my money for a full order :iono:.

If that doesn't show up, a black "Advan" inspired livery is the plan. No matter what happens, black roof wrap will be happening to cover up the rust repair. Recently I received all the tools (tucking tools, magnets, knifeless tape, double sided foam tapes, etc) for learning how to wrap and for installing the aero kit.

So sort of flipped with back at the rear and orange up front? That could look good.

Car is home and has gotten some aero. Wrap, exhaust tips, and some other minor stuff are yet to arrive for "v2" to be complete.
New additions: rep TRD RS 1.0 lip, STI side skirts, rep tS rear spats, Legsport spoiler. Car runs and drives great, forgot how much dang fun this car is.

Coincidentally enough if I had kept it that lip and side skirt combo was exactly what I was considering. Even had them in a shopping cart at one point just before I decided to sell it. Didn’t think of the spats but they finish it off nicely.

Wrapped the roof black and added TRD canards... wrapping sucks, major props to people who do it well for a living. I'm still going to give the livery a shot, and if it ends up being a 20 footer I'll be happy.

And got the interior mostly buttoned up: Vertex shift knob w/ lockout spacer, Blitz gauges in the TRD plate, radio in the glovebox. Still to do is build a mount for my Solo DL so that it covers the 3rd gauge hole. https://i.imgur.com/rxzWqa0.jpg

Took the car to Autox, definitely different than lapping. Was fun to drive the car again on a course.

I prefer lapping my self. Maybe it's just drivetime but auto-x from my experience is 99% standing around and 1% driving :D

Yea, it was fun and I'd definitely go again. But I also prefer lapping, plus the car is much better set up for that with the oil cooler and RS4s. I think I spent more gas idling to get the oil at temp than I did on the course, and the RS4 were only warm during the afternoon mid way through each run

villainous_frx 07-23-2022 10:04 PM

Decided to road trip to Calgary with my s/o. Our route was to drive West through the US of A, Ontario -> Michigan -> Wisconsin -> Minnesota -> North Dakota -> Saskatchewan -> Alberta.

Maintenance before the trip: fresh windshield wiper blades, oil change, checked all fluids, stock seat back in, and most importantly the air freshener was changed.

First stop was Michigan, terrible roads in the first half but the upper peninsula was super smooth and the views were incredible. https://i.imgur.com/PHbf24z.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/qOyDvos.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/BLMOmfK.jpg

Next was Wisconsin, where I did not take any photos as the drive sucked and the roads were terrible. If you live in Wisconsin... why?

After that was Minnesota, pretty straight and uneventful drive. The National Forests were amazing, as were all of the lakes. This photo is taken with a "Yellowstone" 2-8-8-4 steam engine, probably the only thing an 86 could beat in a drag race from a dig. https://i.imgur.com/pFz2KjW.jpg

That's as far as we've made it, next update will hopefully be from Alberta :D

villainous_frx 07-24-2022 08:44 PM

A few more pictures, stopped at the Geographical Center of North America in Rugby ND, and then crossed back into Canada.

Made it to Alberta without issues. Fresh windshield wiper blades performed incredibly, forgot how nice it is to be able to see clearly in the rain. Car is absolutely filthy and a good wash is definitely earned... tomorrow

https://i.imgur.com/EKxNjO2.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/yRJgsOC.jpg

Total trip milage was 3212.4 km
Total fuel stops: 7
Total fuel:
USA - 5 stops 47.603 gal @ an average of $47.45 USD per fill up
Canada - 2 stops 63.04 liters @ C$52.685 per fill up

https://i.imgur.com/W3UwK3t.jpg?1

Overall, I'd do it again... the 86 is a great road trip car! The Ohlins absorbed the bumps beautifully, even with a trunk full of stuff. My only "complaint" is that the RS4 do leave to be desired in the road noise category, but they're designed to be sticky not quiet.

For the drive back to Ontario I plan on stopping in MB and Indiana, with that route I can visit South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, and Ohio as well.

It's been to Illinois several times and Ohio at least 3 but South Dakota and Iowa would add a couple to the list.

Swapped back to the bucket seat from stock and realized I never use the slider, as I am the only driver in this configuration. Decided it was time to go solid mount as well as sit lower, so I ordered a PCI Adjustable Seat Mount.

Install took a little effort to get everything to fit nicely but thus far I am happy with it. The seat is sitting pretty much on the carpet, much lower than the Bride FO rail and OEM seat. Very high quality piece and definitely should've gotten one the first time around.
