Will you buy first year?
 

I always wait for the second year of a model. Wait for the bugs to get worked out. This time I don't want to wait that long.
Bought my '17 at the end of the year but it was only a refresh.
Do you think the engine is already worked out as a modification of an existing plant?

I no longer fear first year models. I had a first year M235i in Germany. Owned 4 years in Germany. No issues at all. I would own the new BRZ and drive with a smile on. A warranty covers the issues well in to the 2nd year and 3 year of production. An extension of the normal warranty is not a bad idea with a first year machine. A good thorough test should be executed before purchase.

i'm too hipster to want what everyone else wants. so i wait a year to get it when they've forgotten how cool it is.

Since the new twins are a chassis with perhaps some sharing of parts and design with the current generation I would be a little less concerned about first year production. Unlike the 2020 Corvette which is not only a new chassis for GM but also an entirely new mid-engine engineering effort. Also consider what Toyota did from the first to the second year of the new Supra. A notable bump in horsepower for about the same price. Of course, you can get caught perpetually waiting for just the right time to buy and never actually doing it.

I'd like to know when the performance package is coming back and what form it will take before deciding. That may be too long a wait though.

Option C: wait for the STI version (and continue enjoying my '13 in the meantime)

I will be interested with the first year sales. MY17 I bought at year end and the sales offers were great. Got 1 % for 7 years. If first year sales are weak I will watch the year end deals.

People been waiting for a BRZ STI for almost a decade now lol.

Rather wait for a performance package, as big red Brembo brakes are always more sexy. I don't see why someone would be in a rush to get gen 2 unless their car is on the last legs of its lifespan, or they totaled theirs recently.

The performance package + 2017 refresh was the selling point for me when I was in the market for my first car. If it takes Subaru/Toyota another 4-5 years after release to bring a higher trim/performance package, then wait I will.

This is the way, wait a few years for the performance packs and special editions to be made available. By then any first/second year issues should have been sorted out.

I never buy the first year of a new model. You pay the highest price and suffer the most teething issues. Sure, most will be rectified under warranty, but recalls and dealer fixes are still inconvenient - you still lose some of your own time.

I adopted early and got one of the limited number of "Recall Edition" FR-S. I've had the work done; my car did not blow up.

I'm happy. Other people did not fair as well...

Production of the 2022 twins is scheduled to begin sometime in the spring of 2021 with first deliveries in October 2021. Since I'm in the NE, no sense in getting the first ones off the line to be sheltered most of the winter. So, since my 2014 (delivery 2/13) will be 9 years old come spring 2022 and the twins will have been in production for over 6 months at that point, most of the early production gremlins should be worked out by then and I won't have any reservations getting into a first year Gen2 twin.

I no longer fear first year models either, but contrary to you, because I already went thru the first year BS with my current Camaro that I intend to get rid of for the new BRZ, and I know I can handle it, as long as you keep your warranty, don't sweat the first year model's potential problems. I wanted to wait, hell, I wanted to actually just get a 2020 until I recently found out of the 2022... I want to wait a year, but TBH I would rather start having my fun now, and if something goes bad early on, let warranty fix it, and go back to having fun, instead of waiting a whole extra year wishing I hadn't waited lol
