As I was reading, I related everything back to D&D and the crazy part is it fits perfectly. Every point about what makes the subject interesting to participants I have either used as a DM or seen in a game. From knowing the rough plot and leaving breadcrumbs so the players tell the story themselves, to taking a cool connection the players made and building a new plot branch around it, and providing rewards for basically creating their own story. It's why playing in a group is more fun, because you get the social feedback and reinforcement.

I don't think it's anywhere close to controversial in either spirit or letter of the rules. So far, I see only Ooo-First-Reply syndrome. For me, the article read as a bit of pop-psychology wrapped in a cool theme.

That is because you are sane. If you were a member of QAnon then having your beliefs described as a “wild misinterpretation of random data” or told that you are a victim of “guided apophenia” would not seem so great. I’m sure they don’t think that their conversations are “pure propaganda”.
