But honestly, software engineering work is a whole lot different from being a pilot.

Maybe half of engineers will want to keep only working from home but I doubt the other half will, at least not full time.

I can’t be the only one who feels this way.

You are far from alone. My youngest is an SE with a large(ish) tech operation. He took this job in December 2019, moved in late January, apparently caught Covid in late February (not sure bc there were no tests available for love or money then) and everyone got sent home while he was sick. Since then it's been all remote.

As you mentioned, he finds himself much more productive at home, but misses the team building aspect of being in the office. They are offering folks several options when a return to office begins.. I think one of them is a split time arrangement. I suspect he'll opt for that, particularly if they let him bring his dog to work.

Sounds about right!

It’s also highly dependent on the kind of work. If I were writing code 75% or more of the time I’d feel way more productive at home a majority of the time as well.

But I sadly don’t have that luxury.

I do think if I were properly ramped up from the beginning I’d have a different opinion on that, though.

There's a party in my head. I'd invite you, but I'm at capacity already.

I can’t be the only one who feels this way.

I do all my coding remotely. If I have to show up there is a broken wire somewhere.

Nah. Introverts need people, but they want a few close relationships. You feel you struggle to build those with a remote team, so they're strangers... And strangers are tiring for introverts.

It's about what gives or takes energy. Go to a party, do you wear out or find more energy as the event progresses? Introvert vs extrovert.

That's like the uncles and cousins of half the people on my street. lol Not me though, any family I had there left for the new world at the time of the revolution. Amazing though that so many people whose familys were trapped there for generations became huge capitalists very quickly once they got out.

Caption on the pic should be, "Stupid, good looking"

I need total knee replacement now.

I have far fewer customer and employee interactions now. Saves me time. But I'd go back in person in a second if I could do so safely.
