Retrofitting FR-S zenki bumper onto kouki 86 - need assistance

Hey guys,

I'd been lurking this forum for about a year, and this past July, I finally picked up a Toyota 86. While I actually don't hate the 2017+ bumper, I am absolutely set on getting the original bumper retrofitted.

I've done as much research as I could via this board along with /r/ft86, and I think I've finally gathered everything needed parts-wise; it was a bit difficult finding details on this retrofit, as most of the information concerns switching to the new bumper rather than the reverse.

Everything circled below has been ordered and received (aside from the bumper cover which I'm picking up this weekend). I've reordered new rivets/clips and retainers to counter the bumper sag as well.

If anyone is able to chime in and confirm whether or not I have everything necessary, that'd be great, however my main concern is the wiring for the lighting. I am not switching out the OEM headlights, but I want to implement the turn signal indicators.

Again, I've ordered everything circled. The only reason the bulbs weren't circled is I went and ordered some switchback LEDs from Diode Dynamics, but this shouldn't lead to any changes in the implementation since they're direct replacements.

I have a shop lined up who will take care of the paint and such, but we're not sure how to go about the wiring ahead of tackling the project - can anyone assist here? I've seen examples of FR-Ss where people have gone with aftermarket headlights (with built-in indicators) while still keeping the original indicators intact, and that is what I'm hoping to achieve with the OEM 2017 headlights.

Any help or leads is greatly appreciated.

I have not done the swap before but it looks like you have everything. Post pics of your progress. Many have asked about doing the FR-S bumper to 2017+ 86 swap but I don't think anyone has actually done it.

What are you going to do with the turn signals on the FR-S bumper?

I'd love to implement them if someone knows how - hence this thread. Anyone know how to wire them?

If anyone cares for the various part numbers I ordered regarding this swap:
  • SU00301484 - Bumper Cover ($266.08)
  • SU00301541 - License Plate Bracket ($23.99)
  • SU00301517 - Bumper Cover Spacer Panel (Left) [$14.17]
  • SU00301516 - Bumper Cover Spacer Panel (Right) [$14.17]
  • SU00307156 - Bumper Cover Support Rail (Left) [$18.21]
  • SU00307155 - Bumper Cover Support Rail (Right) [$18.21]
  • SU00301532 - Grille ($31.36)
  • SU00307121 - Headlight Wiring Harness (x2) [$19.47]
  • SU00302895 - Toyota Nut (x8) [$0.36]
  • SU00302537 - Turn Signal Light (Left) [$62.94]
  • SU00302536 - Turn Signal Light (Right) [$62.94]
  • SU00302572 - Turn Signal Light Socket (x2) [$6.99]
  • SU00303951 - Front Bumper Hole ($5.24)
  • SU00302940 - Bumper Cover Rivet (x4) [$0.54]
  • SU00301506 - Bumper Cover Bracket (Left) [$6.68]
  • SU00301505 - Bumper Cover Bracket (Right) [$6.68]
  • SU00302974 - Bumper Cover Retainer (x2) [$0.86]
  • SU00302793 - Bumper Cover Support Rail Bolt (x2) [$0.86]
  • SU00301535 - Bolt (x2) [$2.27]
Doesn't include the turn signal bulb since I got the aforementioned Diode Dynamics set. Only other thing missing is the front emblem, as I ordered that separately when I picked up the boxer emblems for the side fender garnishes that I'm also swapping.

The 86 headlights have the turn signals integrated. You will have 2 sets of front turn signals if you also wire up the ones in the FR-S bumper.

I would maybe try to convert the FR-S bumper turn signals to fog lights or something. Another option would be the Rocket Bunny v1 brake vents. They completely delete the FR-S turn signals.

I'm aware, that's what I'm trying to get help on here to achieve...

Edit: I've found headlight wire diagrams for the FR-S and BRZ headlights, but can't find one for the 2017+. Perhaps someone knows how they compare or differ.

Interested in this thread as well. I love my FRS "fang" bumper and didn't like the refresh kouki.

Might get a newer 86 in the future and do this swap.

So I managed to find a very informative post by user @Xanatos that I think is the best I'll find for this topic:

This is the FRS 4pin male socket that attaches to the red harness for the turn signals. Here you can see theres 4 wires hooked into the socket. The female side only has 3 pins. What's more interesting is in the electrical wiring diagram for the FRS only 2 wires are used. Ground(black both sides) and positive (white with red stripe) and grey for the other side. I will be tapping into the 8pin socket since the BRZ has them built into the 8 pin socket while the FRS has a full separate 4pin socket for the turn signal.

We will only be using the black and red wires. Note the direction of the socket. Red up top next to green with black diagonal to red.

Unplug the black and red terminals. To do this you need to take off the orange key. Slide the screwdriver into the hole and pry out. And these have locking tabs that need to be pried out too.

I grabbed some extra wire from a broken power supply since the distance between the 8pin socket and the turn signal socket is about 1ft.

Above is a comparison between the wire I used and the stock. The stock is just normal copper cable while the power supply cable is tinned. I prefer the tinned cable for this application as water can be a factor.

Next thing you want to do is strip the black and red wires about 1/2 inch so that you can tap into them. Wrap your extra wire around and solder. Flux is helpful here along with rosin core solder but its not necessary. Heat shrink for safety or electrical tape. However if you use electrical tape I would suggest staggering where you strip the wire. Strip one wire about 1 inch further down so if the tape falls off it will still never make contact.

Once you have the wires soldered you can heat shrink them together if you'd like.

Using the green wire from our old harness I tapped the positive end into the socket. The black ground wire will be tapped into the black ground DRL wire that is in the socket already. Heatshrink them up. Replace the orange key. Refer to my picture above if you need to look at the orientation.
And we are done!

The 2017+ 86 headlights are 8-pin, so I'm going to assume that diagram for the BRZ is identical; so tapping the black and red wires on the headlight wiring harness for the indicators into pins 4 and 1 respectively, I believe?

Gonna keep searching for similar threads, tentatively dropping the car off next week to do the full swap.
