[P0341] Cold start/engine issue

Hi everyone,

My 2013 GT86 has the check engine light on and throws DTC P0341.
Conditions for the issue to happen:
  • Cold start
  • After cold start program stops with the engine still warming up, I clear the DTC codes the code comes back 2 seconds after

After the engine is running warm with coolant temps around 90ºC (~200ºF) I can clear the codes and the P0341 code (or any other code) does not come back. The engine works fine and the car drives as expected :iono:

My car had the valve spring recall done a long time ago and Toyota broke a timing chain tensioner during the recall and asked me to pay to fix it.
I fixed the issue by replacing both tensioners, timing chains, guides and bolts on a external mechanical workshop.
Checked the cams sprockets and nothing was broken or clogged up.

I'm using Techstream software to check everything and even replaced the intake camshaft position sensor and OCV for Bank1 intake cam with new ones. Also got some valve shims because Toyota did not adjust the valves after the recall. The engine never did strange noises and it's currently idling smoothly as expected.

The car is 100% stock.

I'm doing some tests using the Techstream software, I'm able to do an "active test" to force the timing angle of the VVTi to advance on each head of the engine individually.
On intake bank 1 the engine stalls but on intake bank 2 the engine shakes a bit but recovers after.

I'm starting to believe this is an electrical issue and looking for some broken wires.

Would like to know what you guys think about this very strange issue that goes away when the engine is running on warm temperatures.
Which values to look for on Techstream, etc..

:thanks:

Currently the issue remains.
I can't get pass this issue where everything around VVT is set to 0.

I contacted Toyota in my country and they said I have the latest version of the engine calibration... I did some research and found 2 newer versions for the ECU :/

I would inspect the function of the bank-1 intake cam position sensor.

I did that, even replaced with a working one from another GT86.
We measured the voltage, checked the electrical wiring and everything's ok.

We're now replacing the sprocket and next step might be replacing the ECM :iono:

Your car doesnt not have the latest ECU firmware ZA1J700G is and old version and was unpdated specificly for cam and idle issues your car should be running ZA1JA01G thats 3 revisions up on 700G there was 900G A00G and A01G

The upgrade may not fix problem but A01G was released to fix some cam issues idle issue and also transient retard issue

Ooo... the transient retard thingy was baaaad. That's what blew the DI seals, right?

Yes
It was a combination of the incorrect setting in ecu that disabled transient retard over 5000 rpm if you shifted ant higher rpm amd had poor quality fuel

Hi guys,
An update about this. It looks like the intake VVT sprocket was bad after all.
After replacing with a working one from another car, the check engine light is no longer on and the car does the cold start fine.
I know these sprockets had 2 updates since 2012 and the most recent FA20 has some parts that were updated.

Thanks all for your inputs!

Is it possible to update the calibration without going to Toyota dealership?
I have the latest TechStream and cable.
I requested this to Toyota but they don't know how to do this :iono:

I'm very happy to hear of your success! So many troubleshooting threads die unresolved that it can be utterly depressing.

I'm sorry to hear that your official Toyota dealership is incapable of performing a simple firmware update. Perhaps a call or email to corporate would encourage them to read their instruction manuals. :/

Yes you can use a tactrix cable $170 usa se link below in my signature it also has the stock ZA1JA01G rom you need

Its likely possible to flash with techstream, i have not done it but likely requires the rom file in a special format
