5th gear gate lockout

I boutht a 14 BRZ with 65k miles on it. I think it is the stock shifter. During casual driving, when I shift from 4th to 5th gear (under 3000rpm), sometimes the shifter won't get into the rightmost gate at the first attempt, and it takes me a 2nd try with higher effort to put it into the gate for 5th/6th gear. It happens once every 2-3 drives, and more often when the car is cold. It feels like something got stuck inside the shifter linkage. Any idea on that? Thanks!

The previous owner may have messed with the lockout plate. When i dropped my trans for a clutch change and put everything back in somewhat a hurry. I couldnt get into my 2nd gear at all. I adjusted my lockout plate a little and it shifts fine now. Might be the case for your car too also its a easy to check. You just pull the trim and theres 4 bolts/screws/nuts/iforget that holds the lockout plate.

And our car’s transmissions hate it when its cold.

Shift lever top plate can only make trouble for first and second. Look elsewhere.

Run 4th to the red light, clutch in, take a sip of your coffee, let them pass you in the straight, go to 6th, press the gas pedal back to full, do NOT let off for the turn, as they back out and slither around like a snake in wet grass... you just slide on by anyway.

Start with a fluid change. I like Redline MT-90.

Make sure gate the gear straight into the pattern. |

From your driving position, you may tend to gate the gear diagonally. /
Trans doesn't always like this.
