This is a great video showing how taste in cars affect judgement. My take is that the Supra is better for people who like a faster, better performing car. Accelerate faster, take turns faster, don't work so hard for it. The Twins are aimed at people who want to experience the drive and work for their speed. For the first group, the Twins are too intense, too involving, not fast enough. For the second group, the Supra is too isolated, too easy to drive fast.

It's not really a matter of which car is better. It's which car is better for you.

I would add that it also shows the differences in what people are willing to pay for too. I agree with the presenter that said he did not see the value there in the difference in price. I see nothing in the Supra that would make me willing to pay over $16,000 difference between the two.

The "it's not that much difference" argument falls on deaf ears. Only a person who get's his cars for free, or is able to write them off would say that a 50% difference in price is "not much".

Yeah I was curious if people would cross shop these two. It’s the cheapest of the higher spec sports car vs the more expensive (limited edition) 86 entry level sports car. So the potential buyers could overlap. If you were looking at a 2.0L Supra and wandered into a Toyota dealership, surely you’d test drive an 86 whilst you were there, especially a limited edition one. But yeah agree very different cars for a different audience.

We don’t get the 2.0L here so the comparison is even more stark, 86 or 3.0L Supra.

The cars are somewhat comparable spec wise but i dont think theres going to be as much cross shopping as one would think with that price gap.

If it was like 2-3k difference yeah there would be some cross shopping but we're talking about half the price of one of the cars......

On a side note, I actually think the Supra looks better proportioned with the smaller 2.0L spec wheels.....

Its a good thing the cars are as different as they are. If the overlap feels as close to one as the other, then that kind of kills the purpose of one of the cars.

The Supra is for people who want "more car". I want LESS car! A lot less than the Supra...

For me, a REAL sports car should be more like an economy car than a luxury car. I.e., very little $$$ and mass budget spent on coddling people and making them feel like they're driving a bank vault.

The Supra is very much a coupe version of a sportsy BMW luxury 2-seat convertible, with all the added weight that implies. The FT86 is a "cheap" (in a good way!) rwd 2+2 coupe with good basic suspension setup.

What I would like would be a 2-seat FT86, a more cab-rearward car with better F/R weight distribution and shorter wheelbase (which would be lighter still!). But given the choice between the properly cab-rearward 2-seat Supra at 3200 lb at 51F/49R, and the 2+2 compromised 55F/45R FT86 at 2800 lb., I'll go with the Toyobaru over the BMyota...

It's still 20% - 30% depending on the 86 trim level. Still pretty significant to me, particularly given the loss of the 2+2 configuration.

it was a pretty good comparison but the price gap is even bigger if we look at base prices and factor in sales tax...probably closer to a $20 K difference. and why does baldy keep calling it "hitting the bumpstop" when he's referring to being WOT...clearly that dude didn't want to work for it and downshift.

Good video but I wonder how much a MT would help the 4 cyl Supra. Probably 50-80 lbs weight savings, even better weight distribution and more engaging to drive. That’s the one I’d consider as a replacement for the FRS if I was considering a Supra.

This maybe comes down to Go-karts vs. Nascar ?

If I want to go out and have a F.U.N. drive, I'm gunna jump in the go-kart every time, I reckon!

...that said, it would also be fun to jump in the Nascar and mash the accelerator once or twice a year! :-)

And right turn skills need not apply!
