E85 Optimal Exhaust Setup

Hi all,

Am having some conflicting thoughts and was wondering if some more knowledgeable people could chime in.

I'm looking to E85 flex fuel (zeitronix) tune my Subaru BRZ (i live in Australia for context).

Was just wondering what other mods i could include to pull the most power possible from the motor.

I currently have an invidia r400 catback and borla uel v1 headers. No intake mods at all.

I love the subie rumble (UEL) and know that slightly more power is achievable through the EL headers in different ranges of rpm.

So, what other mods/brands could i include (over pipe/front pipe/cold air intake/drop in filters) to make some solid gains whilst potentially retaining an UEL header.

Any constructive info would be mint,

Cheers.

Depends on how much you want to spend and what fraction of the peak you want to shoot for.

The most important thing you need to have to tie everything together is the right tune. Without a proper tune for the hardware set-up you have, you won't be able to take advantage of all the parts you put on the car.

With an idea of what tune you want, you can think about what to add to the car. Off the bat, this is the order of mods I would recommend adding to your current set-up based on cost-to-benefit ratio (new prices):
  1. Performance Intake Filter for OEM Airbox (~40 USD, 2-5 HP)
  2. Catless Front Pipe (~100 to 300 USD, 2-5 HP)
  3. Overpipe (~150 USD, maybe 1-2 HP?)
  4. MY2017 Red intake manifold (~500 USD, 2-5 HP)
Based on the data out there, things like aftermarket intake scoop, intake elbow, aftermarket intake system, intake spacers/power blocks, among others appear to provide marginal cost/benefit over Option #1 and are best left to personal preference. I have an aftermarket intake scoop myself because I like it, but deep down I know it doesn't add much if any.

If you want to shoot for peak NA power, there are things like going for a dyno tune, top-of-the-line headers, ITBs, and a whole other plethora of high end things you can try. Cost plenty of money though.

Not sure what you want to know as far as brands go. There are a lot out there, but a few mainstays are apparent through 86 experience and personal preference.

Thanks for the info.

Yes i should've been a bit more precise with cost as i'm a uni student and don't wish to spend my entire savings.

If you have a later model anything before 2017 I’d definitely invest in a intake manifold from the 2017+ models

The red intake manifold is pointless, and can heatsoak.
2017+ manuals gained 5hp from previous. This is almost entirely from the new header design and corresponding tune for the header.

E85, header, and tune (together) are the only power mods I would consider as power upgrade. If E85 is not convenient, get an FI kit and oil cooler. Everything else is just waste of money.

Engineering design requires tolerances and safety margins. So many people have blown up their engines for getting the maximum power. I don't know how much mileage your 2013 engine has but I wouldn't boost the power of a worn-out engine before rebuilding it.

If you want to stay NA, stick with your setup, get a custom tune, and put your $$ into a lower final drive. Somebody has a used 4.88 set in the classifieds here. That will wake your car right up.

Ace 350 EL or JDL 4-2-1, ecutek tune and get an axleback if you want more noise

I’m running FT86 speed factory catless uel headers, invidia test front pipe & over pipe, and invidia n1 with a Etune from steve wendy “Based in Australia”. And this how my car holds up against boosted cars stock & modded. https://youtu.be/xVVeGWqVs5I.

honestly the answer is ace headers with a tune and a titanium single exit exhaust IS the optimal setup. p2w matters

FWIW I think the highest NA FRS was on e85 and the ptuning 4-1 EL header with full catless exhaust. Made 217 whp on a dyno dynamics dyno. Typical stock FRS’s make 165 whp there.

@pher.da.rico Man your car and this video is the reason i would like to go E85.

My 2013 BRZ has only done 67xxxkms and i would like to save the additional $6000+ AUD of forced induction modifications on another car in the future.

Just want abit more kick and some poppy crackly sounds :)
