Exhaust advise.
So, currently I'm running Borla UEL with muffler delete and running NA. Right now I'm on a leash as far as buying car parts until GF and I finish closing out on our house. That being said I've already allocated funds for the Edelbrock supercharger, PRE racing tune, and funds for exhaust system beyond just muffler delete. Now what I've been back and forth in is the size of the over pipe and front pipe. I've heard that 3" is better to get more flow through and let it breathe better. Now what I'm wonder is that actually legit or for this car is it going to be mostly the same either way? Between the 3 and 2.5 inch.

Are you going for MAXIMUM POWAH or just more than you have now?
Yes a 3" will allow less resistance at greater flow rates, but I doubt it's a whole lot of difference. You could just see if you are happy with the supercharger first, then do exhaust work afterwards. |
More powah, baby! Lol. That being said I want to reach around 280-300 at wheels. So I'm trying to get as many bases covered before hand.
|
More power it is then. I guess the real question then is what pieces of the exhaust are you planning to replace? If you are doing the whole thing, then I would go 3" all the way back based on theory alone. If you are leaving any of the stock pieces in place, 2.5 will probably be fine. Stepping up and down along the way is a good way to cause extra drag in the pipe. I would also swap the UEL for an EL and a customized tune for that header if power is the priority.
Disclaimer, I have yet to change the exhaust on my own car, so theory and my own research is all I got at the moment. |
You know that the money you've saved is going to be eaten by your house immediately, right?
The washing machine will start leaking everywhere and ruin some drywall. The oven will -only- have 4 burners and she'll want 6. The window seals on the basement windows are letting bugs in, ew! Your microwave is old and the door sensor stops working. Uh oh, gotta get the septic tank pumped, it hadn't been done in 7 years! OH NO, the tub's drain stop leaks water behind the wall in the basement and they didn't tell you!!! Time to buy car par- uh oh, she's pregnant! |

Lol, buying brand new house and all be appliances, so not worried about that. 20% down and another 15k for anything else we may need. I'm well enough off I'm not so worried about extra stuff that happens. Have another 13k set aside for car at the moment. Which isn't including rainy day fund.
So more figuring out the what works best. Fun side note I have lived out of a garage before. The winters suck. |
Mighty Car Mods saw some really nice power gains on their BRZ with the UEL header. That’s a turbo setup though. And I’m not sure if it’s a 2.5 or 3 inch system. I think 2.5?
Also, consider going with an ethanol tune for max power. And also consider all of that parts that could break as a result. [emoji16] Good luck with the house and car! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I would love to go e83 but there's only one station in my location that I know of and it's 43 mile drive to it. RIP. Glad to hear someone could get those gains with UEL. Ideally I'd like to keep the borla and milk the most I can out of the supercharger. Going with SC for reliability and keeping it a daily. Lol, well as much reliability as I can ask for out of that. Going above 300 I'm looking at just getting a weekend car for that. |

I think that’s a really good approach, and you can also upgrade parts later on. I understand not wanting to swap out exhaust pieces too often. Especially the header and up pipe. And yeah E85 is getting harder to find in a lot of places. The high compression of the FA20 is great for making extra power, especially if you have a conservative tune. Keep us updated! Headers you also have runner diameter, which is actually important. I don't recall MCM saying what their runner diameter was. OP, new question to help people help you, how loud are you willing to let your car get? |
Personally I don't mind it being loud as long as it has a good tone to it. The Borla's I'm running are catless and with the muffler delete it's already fairly loud. I've considered straight piping it with a resonator as well.
