2017+ steering wheel/wrap options
I'm thinking of upgrading the steering wheel on my 2018 BRZ. From what I could find, there are a few aftermarket wheels, mostly Revesol, Real Original and TOM's. For wraps it looks like Wheelskins and Mewant (on eBay).
I'm only looking for real leather, don't want alcantara/suede or carbon fiber and it has to keep the airbag (it's a daily driver). Any other options I missed? Does anyone have first hand experience with any of these or others? I've also reached out to Redlinegoods about them supporting the 2017+ style but they stopped responding after a few emails, so I'm not sure if that's gonna go anywhere. |
I tried a mewant off ebay. The wrap is cut very precisely with little room for error.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/Q2QAA...p4H/s-l500.jpg It's easy to wrap, but difficult to master if you're looking for perfection. If you are very OCD about each stitch or loop being perfectly the same size/shape/length, it will practice and patience. I highly recommend taking the wheel off the car as I just left it on. Some angles are going to be hard to reach especially near the thumb bends. See the picture below, notice how each loop is very consistent? Goodluck! https://i.imgur.com/32ZDJBW.png The prepackaged doublesided tape that comes with it is super sticky. Some of the stickiet stuff I've ever used and it's very very very thin. If you ever decided to remove the wrap, I'll warn you that this double sided tape will require something stronger than goo gone to get off your original steering wheel. I used 3M adhesive remover that comes in a black spray can... warning: it's strong enough to start dissolving your factory paint. I had suede and apparently leather is more difficult to use due to thickness. I already had to tug hard on the threads to pull the wrap fully around the thickness of the steering wheel, and yet some areas are crunched up and you can see the original wheel through the gaps. If you pull too hard on the thread, it'll start looking thinner as it's getting stretched and then it may snap on you and you'll need to start on that side all over again. That's how tight the tolerance was for my wrap. If you have a lot of time to wrestle with the wrap material, you can truly adjust it so it's OEM flush like no gaps no bunching up no crunches. Tucking the material under the steering wheel's trim pieces is another challenge especially if you didn't get lay the wrap perfectly dead center from the get go. One side is going to have a wee bit more material than the other, resulting in one side not having enough material to stay tucked in. There's little room for error here and I would suggest you first place the wrap over the wheel and try to mark where dead center is. Instructions will tell you to place the double sided tape down before you start sewing it up tight and I don't want you to end up sewing it all together only to find out one side tucks and the other doesn't. |
Sweidit on Instagram/Facebook. I had him redo my sun visors, brake handle, shift and brake boot. He uses Nappa leather, it looks and feels great. He has redone many steering wheels for all years of the twins.
https://i.imgur.com/3fAnqDf.jpg I personally have the REAL steering wheel. It has a slightly smaller diameter than the OEM wheel, it's D-shaped and the leather is much better than OEM pleather. You can pay extra to have the stitching color changed... but personally if I had to go back, I would have just had Sweidit redo my OEM wheel. |
I really like this one. It's leather and let's you keep your OEM controls and airbags. The one posted above is also a good option. So many options out there, depending on your budget. I would not personally spend too much on a steering wheels, but that's me. A nice steering wheel does improve the driving experience though. I have the 2020 TS and I'm not really a fan of the round one.

Bumping this!
So I tried getting in contact with Sweidit on both Instagram and Facebook and both times they left me on read. Are they still in business or just so backed up they won't respond to you for several months? |
REAL leather with custom yellow stitching, linky. :)

Looks great. The yellow stitching adds a nice contrast. |

I will be looking to do something like this eventually. I scratched the hell out of my stock wheel with zippers from sweaters/jackets.

Isn't the factory wheel "real leather"? Honestly it's one of my favorite stock steering wheels. I like it a lot better than the one that was in my 987.2 Cayman.

The REAL steering wheel is the name of the brand, and for its price point I doubt it's any quality top grain or Nappa leather, probably bonded as well. Edit - I mistook REAL with Revesol. Revesol is a cheapo eBay wheel. REAL is a pricier one, apparently from Japan. |
